Hey all,
For those who have been hospitalized for attempting to SH or ctb, what happens when you're there?
I just need straight answers, don't have time to read through forum posts.

In Belgium, when you are in the general hospital and they ask you if you want to get better and you say yes you will go to a psych ward that is open and u are able to leave whenever you want, when you say you don't want to get better and want to try to ctb again, the court will demand a mandatory stay for 10 days In a closed ward, after 10 days the court will decide if you are still a risk to yourself or others and can prolong your stay or move you to a different ward

Depends if they think you are at risk of CTB they may try to commit you where you'll be forced to take meds, therapy, etc... If they don't care so much maybe you'll be discharged within 72 hours.

when you say you want to get better you can also just go home, u are a free person if you don't show any signs of sh of ctb again

so is it a 3 day minimum stay?

I appreciate the response regarding Belgium's policy, that sounds good if you have the freedom to leave, though I wonder about the U.S.
Also I'm curious about the policy if you are a minor

In the US, they can hold you for a minimum of 72 hours, but they can hold you longer if they want to. You can't leave until the doctor tells you that you can leave. Even if you go in voluntarily, you still can't leave until the doctor says you can. The doctor can change it to an involuntary commitment if he doesn't want you to leave.

Nothing much happens when you are there. The doctor talks to you and does an assessment. He will recommend putting you on medication if he thinks that you need it. After that, they just hold you there until your insurance stops paying for it. Then they refer you to a therapist for follow up care and kick you out.

If you are a minor, your parents would be involved in the process. Why do you want to know the policy for minors? How old are you?

I am not a minor, I am wondering because my brother was just committed and he is a minor.

Thank you everyone for your responses.

In Canada you are put on suicide watch during your hospital stay then you are sent to a psych hospital where you are evaluated, if the psychiatrist declares that you are still a risk to yourself then you are committed until they find you okay enough to be on your own. You can't really sign a refusal of treatment as you are not mentally capable of making your own choices, only a legal guardian or someone legally responsible for your decisions during crisis can get you out of there early.

Basically this. If they try to commit you.... You are also given a lawyer and a second opinion in terms of being seen. Though if there's evidence of you trying to CTB I'd imagine you won't win. Being committed also means you lose fundamental rights...
