The phrase comes from the "It Gets Better Project", which is a movement dedicated to preventing LGBT teens from committing suicide. The slogan was meant to send a message to LGBT youth that while they may be in an environment filled with homophobia, transphobia, etc, once they're old enough to move out of such places, they may be able to find more welcoming and accepting spaces and communities.

That's all well and good, but the problem is people took that slogan and applied it to every suicidal person in every situation, not realizing that it, in fact, does not get better for everyone.

It's just a platitude that people are programed to say to try and make people feel better.

It doesn't really mean anything of substance by the person who's saying it. I see it as the equivalent of "thoughts and prayers"

something people say to others but they're really saying it to themselves because they're terrified of the fact that their lives are meaningless and in the end it doesn't actually get better. it just ends.

Try asking in the Recovery section of the site. they might have some more relevant insight about this.

That phrase just sounds like empty words and toxic positivity to me, it's just nonsensical especially as there is literally no limit as to how torturous existing can get as after all we exist in this reality where chance so senselessly determines everything. In my case what I have a problem with is existence itself, I see nothing desirable about being conscious and aware in this meaningless, cruel and futile existence, only ceasing to exist can make things better for me as I only wish to be eternally free from this existence.

It should have been "It may or may not get better, are you willing to wait and find out"?

For a select few it gets tolerable or it goes away. But I suspect most of us here, are outcasts to that statement.

Realistically what it means is: "I dont want to think about this subject, it's making me uncomfortable. Accept my meaningless platitude so that i can feel better about myself, or I'm going to get frustrated!".

What they mean by "it gets better" is that you are in for a shit sandwich about to be shoved down your throat followed by a severe illness that takes you to misery lower than the center of the earth.
You'll be beaten to shit by life and in a mental fog so dense you are suddenly thankful for the morsels of ass burger life will feed you. Like a prisoner who genuinely thanks the guard and thinks them merciful because they skipped the afternoon lashings for 'good behaviour.'
That you will develop a Stockholm syndrome relationship with the slings and arrows of life and preach about gratitude like them.

Going a bit against the grain here, but I think it can be true. It depends on your situation. I had a situation with an ex and after blocking, it did, in fact, get better. With mental illness, it may or may not get better. I still have shitty situations that I don't know if they will get better, hence my being here. You may get more negative replies here than if you were to post in recovery.

The phrase "it gets better" is usually used as a warning, it means the person thinks you're acting out of your place and are not allowed to criticise your situation. Similar phrases are "that's enough" and "nobody cares". Sometimes it's used as wishful thinking to convince oneself.

It's something that people who don't/aren't suffering say to people who are suffering to make themselves feel like they made a difference without actually doing shit
