1. Securely hiding SN offsite
For anyone worried about their SN being found during a police search (whether due to illegality or based on suicide/welfare concerns) or by housemates/relatives/friends, measure a lethal dosage (i.e. your relevant Xmg × 3 serves), triple-bag it in small ziplock bags and put it in a portable key safe. Affix this somewhere in a discrete location completely unrelated to any premises that could be linked to you (home, business, friends, relatives etc.). Abandoned industrial sites, back alleyways behind multi-tenant buildings and various other places will usually have narrow pipes, wire fences or similar things you can use. Drop it off at night and ensure you aren't seen. You can even do this with multiple key safes in multiple locations if you want some extra redundancy.
The key safe (with combination you set) ensures that it won't be accidentally found or consumed by others. You might want to clearly label the ziplock bag inside as 'Poison' just in case someone does break in and assume it is recreational drugs.
Generally a key safe, even if someone actually notices it, is assumed to belong to someone else in the nearby businesses/homes for legitimate spare key storage. Note that this works best around locations that no burglar would actually want to force open your key safe and break into. So abandoned and derelict premises are best for this purpose.
2. Dealing with the police
A few people in this thread have mentioned that if their SN was confiscated they would make sarcastic comments to the police along the lines of 'Are you going to take my bleach and shoelaces as well?' or 'I'd just go jump off a bridge anyway'. Do not make these comments. Never. Not even clearly as a joke. If the police are determined to section you, they will use and even misquote them as evidence to justify their decision, even if they know full well you are making them humorously.
If police do come around and ask about your SN, you have two courses of action. You can either choose the path of least resistance and give it to them, or you can refuse. Factors influencing this decision may include how confident you are around police, whether you have read up in advance on your rights, whether you have spare SN you can retain, whether you have backup methods, and how easily you could obtain replacement SN if needed. In either scenario, it is smartest to not say anything to police. If you're going with the second option, just say 'no comment' to everything. The police are probably largely just following up on information in a box-ticking capacity. If you say 'no comment' and refuse them entry, then they can tick off that they have done everything they could but you have exercised your rights and the matter is closed.
Great idea, I hope people are reading your message instead of panicking as you can hide it outside anywhere. Cheers
