democracy-loving Ukrainian people.
Perhaps this is true, but the Ukraine president jailed the opposition leader and banned all opposition media. Ukraine is not considered a democracy by any experts. 🤔 Not a full democracy, not a partial, not a democracy at all.

Lol, such idiocy. Presidents in UA can't even win second term. Why do you lie? Poroshenko failed, Yanukovich failed, Yuschenko failed. There is a working democracy.

Unless you're just making silly claims for propaganda value, you seem to already think Ukraine will come out on top. So, the reason you want NATO military intervention is just to make a whole lot more people "endure great pain and suffering" or...?

I never said Ukraine is going to "win" this war on the battlefields. The Ukrainians are vastly outnumbered and heavily outgunned. Plus they have a civilian population to protect, who are their own families, friends and neighbours, apart from saving as much as possible of the institutions and infrastructure of their nation.

The Russians don't go to war as any civilised country would. They don't mind committing cold-blooded mass slaughter or genocide of the civilian population of a place and flattening entire cities & towns and reducing them to rubble as long as they achieve their military aims.

What I meant was the Ukrainian nation and people will emerge out of these dark times imposed upon them by an invading army. They are being deliberately subjected to great pain and suffering, but they have been through the horrors of the Holodomor imposed on them by the Soviet commies and through the horrors of WW II imposed on them by the Nazis and the commies. The resilient and heroic Ukrainian nation survived those horrors, and will do so again. 💙💛

what? do you not want people stand up to the bully?
No, l fully expect civilians to flee warzones and find a place of safety for themselves and their loved ones, the notion that folk seeking refuge in such situations are somehow cowardly for doing so is something l can't subscribe to.

Refugees are a natural outcome of invasion and imo the gestures of support towards Ukrainian civilians who are likely to suffer the most from this should be about offering them safety rather than urging them to stand up and fight Putin' s military might. It's quite telling to me in the UK, where our NATO cheerleaders and decrepit cold warriors are barely concealing their excitement for bloodshed, it's easier for a Russian oligarch to buy a seat in the House of Lords than it is for a Ukrainian civilian to seek refuge.

Given this website prides itself on being a Safe Haven of Empathy Hugs I'm sure everyone here agrees with this position and no further discussion is necessary.

I don't need to debate who should and who shouldn't seek refuge from a country invaded by a superior military power as I'm not the one appointing myself as arbiter on Ukrainian military conscription policy. The fact that you're even entertaining the notion of a less deserving refugee in this instance tells a lot about you imho, it's very peculiar how the Empathy Hugs have suddenly become short in supply here.

Then why 18 yo s signed up for army in Britain fighting against Germany in 1940s. Would you have said it is wrong for civilians to fight as you do rn?

Thought so.

Britain wasn't invaded during WW2, this is a false equivalence.

Show me where I said it was invaded.
Are you being, and l choose this phrase very carefully, deliberately obtuse?

Britain is surrounded by water. It's therefore impossible for Nazi Germany to roll in the tanks and march in the troops. British people who wanted to enlist in the fight against fascism did so and of course there was conscription back then, others remained to aid the war effort at home as Britain could only be attacked by air. There is no equivalence here as for Brits in WW2 it wasn't a choice between fleeing or fighting an enemy who had literally invaded however, even so, it's not for any of us to assess the characters of people seeking refuge from war and it's actually quite unpleasant to see armchair military strategists on this website with a hard on for war speaking in condemnatory terms, from a very safe distance, about the civilians within shooting distance who choose to flee.

It would be much cowardice to give up a democratic country without putting up a fight.

I get that civilians fear for their dear life,
but the fact Russians are not even specifically targeting civilians, yet hundreds of thousands fleeing to neighbouring countries is seem somewhat bizarre to me.

Since NATO is not sending troops into Ukraine, they might as well take in some refugees.

So you are in favour of civilians signing up only if they are not invaded.

Going to repeat myself here but bullshit armchair generals who treat war as a weird cross between televised sport and pornography should probably curtail their character assessments of the civilian population who are caught directly within it, l would also add that those who repeatedly hammer the "hmph" react like a petulant child on an Internet forum should also refrain from querying the stoicism and moral fibre of those who are literally under invasion from a vastly superior military power.

To be clear l am not in favour of the refusal of refugee status to civilians because some fucking idiot has decided fleeing war is cowardly and unpatriotic. I'm surprised this is so difficult to understand but here we are.

Further, this is a public forum, as soon as you start a thread and hit send you no longer own the replies that follow and can not police participation, that's kind of how it works.

It is extremely cringey of you calling people "obtuse"/"insufferable choad".
This was the second time u have done that.
You must be so proud.

I'm not interested in reporting people because i dont believe in censorship.
All you have to do is refrain from doing that.
This is a public forum after all.
