Yea those are the two situations I've definitely seen in the US will get you not admitted a lot of them time

I've seen it happen to numerous people with frequent hospitalizations for self harm and homeless people in the US not being admitted. Both with specific plans that weren't "believed". Happens more than you think.

That surprises me, but I believe you knowing how many things have changed for the worse.

When I came back from abroad with no money and no place to stay, I went right up to a cop in the airport and said I was suicidal so I would be hospitalised just to have a roof over my head. I ended up being locked up for 3 fucking weeks. It was a nightmare. That was a long time ago. This world is truly atrocious.

I think a big part depends on where you live in the US too. In big cities, resources are slim and ERs I've worked in the past back when I was a functional person dismiss people all the time who are deemed "frequent fliers". You might get worked up once and then minimally after. There are only a handful of types of electronic charting systems (with one being the most popular) which make it easy to see records that can span across the country by health care providers if a hospital uses the same charting system as another hospital. The availability of electronic documentation increases the chance people can view visits from other facilities.

So far the only professionals I told my suicidal instincts are my psychiatrist and my therapist. I did not get bounced around but the former did not seem to care much. He prescribed some medicines and that's it. The latter tried to avoid the argument and focused more on other things we discussed in the past.

I have no idea what would happen if I called an emergency number here and told them that I am about to commit suicide. I guess they would dispatch an ambulance but no clue about what would happen next. I also do not feel like I would do something like this. If I heave gather the courage to do it I will probably do it alone.

I have the feeling that you are not sure about this step and I think that is ok. Take the time you need to figure it out what you really want.

Please, never call emergency like that unless you want to get institutionalised. If you feel like they should segregate you, OK, call. But if not then you're in for a nasty surprise.

They are not here to help you. They are just there to prevent you from making a mess for them.

I don't think that the OP is here anymore, they posted another thread a few days after this saying they have took the SN and they haven't been seen since on the forum. I think that it could be a bit late to give them any advice. Rest in peace OP.

It boggles my mind how OP's mental health services did not act (accordingly) here. I am not saying that it would have been better to commit OP, but the fact that they asked for help for months and even expressed concrete plans at the end shows, in my understanding, that they had not only hoped for help, but had fought for it, until the very end, which only makes the whole thing more tragic.

If OP has really passed away, I wonder if legal action cannot be taken against their mental health services since the they knew of their intention. This is really fucked up but probably/sadly not that unusual.

It's normal in the UK with the NHS. In the seaside town where I stayed this summer there was an out of hours crisis service that is open 365 days a year which is pretty amazing. Where I am in London, nothing, tho there are plans for one. Mental health services in this country are generally laughable, we're not nearly as litigious as in the US, if we were then they would be sued to oblivion for all the vulnerable people they routinely neglect, ignore, mistreat, abuse and generally fail.
