Discussion Threads app user dislikes it when drug addicts become religious in recovery

Greetings,


this will mention Christianity and religion, so I hope this is the right subforum since philosophy is also allowed here and religions enter such territory to a degree.


A week or so ago, I saw a post in Threads - a rather new social media owned by Meta (same people that own Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, and so on), that said something like ''the saddest thing about knowing (/loving?) someone with an addiction is losing them to Christianity after they recover''.

(My dearest apologies, I would link the post or show you a picture of it, but I have recently been banned from Instagram which in turn also removed my Threads account. So you can choose if you want to believe if this exists. But bear with me.)


This was not a ''bait'' post afaik. And even if it were, 0/10.


I am not Christian. My belief respectfully criticizes popular standards in the world that stem from Christianity (I am not Satanist, just thought I would mention this here for context). But I would for example, always rather have a Christian son than a bodily ill or dead son. I won't sugarcoat it, that's the reality of drug addiction. Love or hate religion, find it stupid or not, what could make someone say something like this? Am I thinking too much into it as someone who had to watch people I knew or loved succumb to drug use?


Let us say, hypothetically, you posted the post I have mentioned.

How much do you really love them if you cannot appreciate the strength they built to escape the mental torment that is a severe addiction, and instead gag around about how they are religious now? As long as they are not an extremist, what's the problem with that?

I absolutely agree with you. Even if their newfound religion isn't my cup of tea I'd accept their religious views as having helped them escape addiction. It's not a problem outright and definitely much better than dying of addiction. Having been through it myself, I would have held onto anything that could have saved me.

Although I can definitely see some possible issues arising from someone finding religion and feeling it saved them from the depths of despair. Like them becoming overly zealous and vindictive maybe? I've also never agreed with the "putting all your faith in a higher power and none in yourself" type of deal.

I like hearing stories like this~ They are very neat! ^_^ Altho, the person's complaints are rather unfortunate, thank you very much for sharing! :) I love seeing people being freed~ ^_^ I just read about something similar with Suiho Tagawa (an early mangaka) and his alcoholism too! Teehee~
Anyways, this thread made me realize something else too so thank you~ :)

It does seem odd. But then, maybe the person is expecting too much of their loved one. They'd rather they hadn't fallen into addiction to begin with in order to need religion to pull them out.

As another member mentioned though, it could be that they've become over zealous and vindictive. A friend once said that compared to non smokers, it will be smokers who quit who will seem to harass others who do still smoke. I guess finding religion could additionally make them either take a moral stance or, a convertist one.

I suppose also, when a person firmly doesn't believe, they can find religious people foolish. They may even worry that the conversion may not last if they start to doubt their new found faith. In which case, will they return to addiction without it?

It sounded more like they were just tired of their loved one's new 'fix' as they might see it. Which I agree- is cruel when you consider what it saved them from.

As an atheist who believes in a religion without a god(?) (idk), I do think that atheists who are radically against ALL religion are annoying and they ignore the benefits of religion and how it has helped society and shaped culture.

If someone needs god to feel security and happiness in this world then by all means believe in it. We don't know where we'll go after all this.
