I joked with my friends that they should stop discriminating me for my use of generative AI. They told me they are already censor themselves heavily and that they have to surpress their anger when I am talking about AI.
Personally, I think I have a better chemistry with people who are anti-AI. I have close to no friends who use AI frequently. In the new self-help group I am in there are some people who are in favor of AI and they use in a similar way than me.
But my friends vent a lot how horribly humankind has devolved when they see in public transport people using AI chatbots as therapist or like a friend. Some might people be aware how my former therapist betrayed me and stabbed me in my back. I have lost trust in human therapists. I know it is important to re-gain trust in the system again but it is too early. And I am not sure when or if I am able to trust in them again...
I wonder whether this will be the new culture war. I once posted a thread with mentioning all reasons why AI is so controversial.
I even found it. https://sanctioned-suicide.net/thre...tifical-intelligence-so-controversial.228063/
I really wonder in which direction we will move. The financial markets are really nervous for various reasons. One reason is the economic growth accelerated by AI might be an illusion. It is probaby more complicated than simply saying it is a bubble. There are some use cases for the technology and companies in this sector make profits for example through cloud services. I think google is actually making money with gemini because it is integrated in the search engine.
Which usage of the technology makes yoyur blood boil the most? I have a friend who is an artist and he is really really pissed about AI. From the people close to me he hates AI the most. I really wonder what my friends will/would do if their employer forced them to use generative AI. They responded they would prefer become unemployed. But in this case I am not sure whether they are actually this idealistic. I could imagine that using it was a toll on their mental health. But I am not sure whether the people who boycott the technology privately will be able to boycott in at their work place. In the sectors that are canabilized by AI the most there is the highest need for knowledge how to deal with this technology. And if a certain German newspaper reports the truth. Especially people with close to no work experience will be hit by the impact of AI the most. They say work experience makes you able to differentiate between good and bad output of AI. And the low level beginner jobs are replaced by AI thr most.
Personally, I could imagine we will end in an AI dytopia. I think the societal impact of this technology will be mostly negative. But I in contrast to my friends I don't think the technology had no usage or no positive impact. My naive dream. And I think this really will not happen. I wish unemployment would become less stigmatized. I will never be able to work. And well I would benefit of a society where most jobs were replaced by AI or robots. Though indicators rather point in the direction that AI will be used by humans at their workplace. In an attempt to boost productivtity.
Oh I wanted to make my point. They are really really pissed when I generate an image with AI. I never generated a video. I can sort of understand where they are coming from. Most AI pictures are garbage, poison the internet, waste a lot of resources with no real benefit. And honestly I have sometimes a guilty conscience generating an AI image. Primarily because I don't use these images. It is very rare I let AI generate pictures. The quality is often also very poor. I try to understand the limits of generative AI by using it. I think though I am not particularly good in that. I am very susceptible to be influenced by AI feedback because of my personality structure, biases and living situation. I am not that well versed in aesthetics. I asked a couple of times friends when I found an image where I suspected it might be AI generated. X becomes has so much worse since the emergence of AI content. The same applies to Youtube shorts and certain Youtube channels.
My friends also blame me on a personal level when I use AI in a wasteful way. They say I waste resources. But honestly I am not sure whether I am actually this wasteful. I used AI for this calculation. How much electricity and water had to be used for my usage of generative AI. And it wasn't that much. And actually changing my bathing habit (which I just did) might save more resources in the longrun.
I can see this accumulates when billions use this technology. But actually on a personal level the waste of resources is small compared to other activities. My friends often blame me for ordering cheap stuff from Asia or ordering from US companies with bad working conditions. With working conditions they probably have a point. But actually when you compare raw numbers of wasting of resources. My friend who loves travelling (which is also extremely expensive) he probably has a way higher CO2 footprint than me and a worse impact overall. Actually I spent my whole day in my apartment, use public transport, I don't have expensive hobbies. I think affluent people have an exponentially higher CO2 footprint and are way worse for the environment. Yes I probably contribute to the problem. But my friends never criticized my friend who loves travellinng for going on a cruise trip. And I have to say my lifestyle takes a lot of time. If I had alternative hobbies to AI usage, streaming and whatever. These substitudes would probably waste more resources.
Edit: One thing that I forgot. I wondered whether my AI usage was a net negative for AI companies before paying for a subcription. I read something in a German newspaper meta makes roundabout 200 Euros with the data of one person with their different accounts on their platfroms within one year. That surprised me. And I think AI companies have even way more personalized data than facebook. So I guess even "free users" generate a lot of value. But I am not sure how exactly they calculated it in this instance.
