Polyester is the best, as it's less stretchy and stronger than polypropylene. However, polypropylene still works fine.I've read in posts that dock line is the best, about 1/2 inch thick (thumb thick).
The length depends on your local circumstances. You have to be able to tie a noose, tie it to the anchor point and depending on whether you plan partial or full you need a certain length to hang freely that depends on your room/tree height especially if you plan full.
