The most secure way to succeed with Nitrogen and replace the exit bag

In this thread I will explain with several posts over the time the most secure way to succeed with Nitrogen and replace the exit bag, because no one likes the bag.

No hearsay.
No speculations.
No dangerous superficial knowledge.

This is so important, because Nitrogen is a very dangerous method if done not properly. One will have brain damage.

Materials

• 10 L tank of pressed Nitrogen with purity of at least 99,9 % (2.000 Liter)
• Regulator. Only to check, if there is enough gas in the tank, so no flow meter needed.
• Premium double open-ended spanner to connect the regulator to the tank and to turn the cap of the tank, if it is too tight. Cheap spanner can damage the regulator, because the opening with cheap products is not always exactly the size it should be. For W24 like in Germany the double open-ended spanner has to be 30/32 mm. Spanner from Gedore are very good.
• Ocean Reef Neptun Space G Divers full face diving mask or higher. This mask has an integrated 2. stage regulator, 6 straps, a great silicone seal and a knob to adjust the demand valve. A silicone orinasal pocket is built with 2 one-way valves through which Nitrogen is inhaled. Exhaled air is directed through a valve under the orinasal pocket. This limits the mixing of used air (which contains high amounts of CO2) with the Nitrogen breathed from the regulator. You can breath fully relaxed also through the nose.
• Scubapro Superflow hose with at least 1,50 m. The hose of the mask is only 80 cm, which is too short. There must be a margin for movements.
• Scubapro MK2 EVO 1st Stage
• Adapter to connect 1st stage to the tank. For W24 it is thread adapter compressed air G 5/8" internal thread and Nitrogen W24 internal thread.
• Leak spray
• Three bungee cords to fix the upper body and partial fix the arms so that there are no problems with convulsions and SI. Handcuffs or something similar would even stronger the SI.
• 5 L tank of compressed air to get used of the whole set. With that one can exercise everything and get used of the breathing through the demand valve. At least twice a week for half an hour. 30 minutes are expected to be the maximum duration for everything with this set. So exercises for 30 minutes again and again will also lower the SI.
• Silicone grease. Please do not use petroleum-based products such as petroleum jelly. The chemicals in these products will attack the silicone seal and make it porous.
• Shaver. A hairy face is very problematic for the silicone seal.
• Silica gel packets. To store the equipment always dry.

The silicone of this mask is really worth the price. There is no way, that anyone could do it better. Warning! If one forgets to open the communication port cap before putting on the mask and the demand valve knob is entirely closed, one will suffocate very quick, so airtight it is.

So the very first thing is to execute several times, how to open the two lower straps, because this will release the mask from the face within a second.

Don't lose the rubber ring, when you will open the communication port cap.

The two silicone blocks inside the mask can be removed, because they are only for the diving pressure compensation.

If one will still go with Helium, there are devices, you can measure, if there is any O2 in the gas. It's no fault to do that test also with Nitrogen. Who has a safer feeling, will have a more peaceful CTB and a lower SI.

Normally such devices are very expensive.

Two good options

CY-12C Oxygen Analyzer, 80 - 100
Dräger Pac 6000 O2, 200 - 250

Use a bag to test it. If possible, you can use your regulator or you can put the device into a bag, empty the bag out of all air, fill it with gas, hold the bottom with your hand like a balloon, let the gas still flow with a tube and out of the bag between your fingers, so that the remaining O2 will be go away and then read the purity. Have patients. It can take some minutes to have the correct result.

If it is 1 %, the gas is working. If it shows 2 %, than repeat the test, if if can go to 3 %. In this case I would make more tests. Everything higher than 3 % result with that devices can be dangerous and should be also tested some more times with a new bag or a different set, because this meters can have a margin of error in the result between 1-2 %.

Do not forget. With this method the critical range between being unconsciousness and risk of brain damage because of a failure is 4-6 % O2.

Sensors of O2 devices do not last for many years.

CY-12C Oxygen Analyzer, 1 year
Dräger Pac 6000 O2, 2-3 years

After that time you have either to replace the sensor, which is possible with CY-12C Oxygen Analyzer or purchase a new one.

But if the tank is not leaking, you have only to test one time, but believe me, for your mind it is a good investment. If one understands the method in theory but will see with the own eyes, how is looks like without O2, if will be a mental help.

Could you please provide more details about how to fix ourselves and our hands with straps the best way? Both to a bed or to a recliner chair. Should the chair have a space between the armrests and its body?

If there is no time or money for expensive gear, what are all the things that can be done to make a simple exit bag as succesful as possible? In case of a bag, lying down is not good I've read? What about elevating the head and softening potential convulsions with pillows or smth?

I haven't really found information about anybody having brain damage from exit bag. It could be that we just don't know but it seems the plain bag if executed correctly has a very good success rate. With some failures by tearing the bag off but that seems to happen EARLY in unconsciousness with no time for brain damage if I'm not mistaken.

The OP is recommending using SCUBA gear to ctb with inert gas, for those who don't want to use the exit bag but still want to use the inert gas method.

You can use the cylinder>>gas flowmeter>>tube>>exit bag method no problem, if you prefer that method.
