  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

Today I have read a German newsarticle. There was an interview with a suicide scientist. He said the following (the statement from the title)
He further explained the main reasons for suicide are desperation, loneliness and pain.
Moreover the people think I am aburden for everyone and the world would be better off without me.
I especially disagree with the sentence from the title. It sounds like we would be all irrational beings. What are your thoughts on it?

The usual bullshit... If you reach the conclusion that your life is no longer worth living, you're immediately labelled as "unable to think", which is just a euphemism for a "lunatic"

I don't feel well enough to explore this in depth, although there's a lot to pick apart here.

It's reminiscent of the usual stereotypes surrounding suicide: That it's an emotionally charged, impulsive and irrational act, that it's a permanent solution to a temporary problem, that we are incapable of informed choices as autonomous adults, because desiring death is inherently "wrong" irrespective of the circumstances.

It's the same old cliché, one-sided, narrow-minded anti-choice rhetoric that prevails in most societies. Suggesting that suicidal individuals are incapable of logical, intelligent and sensible reasoning is hardly anything new.

The same message is rehashed and rewritten repeatedly with various "experts" that all declare that they have answers and insight, yet perpetually peddle the same tired narrative and vehemently reject any alternative perspectives that do not present the suicidal as fundamentally flawed individuals with nonsensical, warped views of the world.

In this society, you either embrace life and agree with the status quo that it has inherent value and must be preserved at all costs, or you are deemed delusional.

As for the title, I think it's nonsense. Of course suicidal people have not lost the ability to think. It's their thinking which has led to the conclusion of suicide. It just sounds like an attempt to invalidate the suicidal by labelling their actions as having no rhyme or reason.

I disagree with the title. In my case, my suicide is an rational decision. I want to spare myself from decades of suffering, it is the only thing that makes sense to me. Wanting to die is a rational response to a life like mine. I am thinking clearly. It is not an impulse decision, I have came to this conclusion after years of suffering.

The title reminded me of Robert Anton Wilson when he said 'believe is the death of thought' a sentiment borne out by yet another block-headed medical 'expert'.

I would love to know why reductive idiocy is the norm, rather than the exception, from the medical community in particular, and society at large, to suicide. According to Camus suicide is the first question in life to answer, why live?

I guess if you have a nice life it's an unthinkable thing.

"Wie ein Zusammenbruch des Denkvermögens", god what an insufferable asshole. Denkvermögen can also be translated as 'intellectual capacity' or 'faculty of thought'. We are all brain dead idiots according to this 'expert', just because we don't buy into the prevalent sunshine & rainbow optimism of society.

That person could have just said "suicidal people are dumb" without all that pseudointellectual BS. Doesn't sound as smart or justified or sciencey but at least it is more sincere.

I misread the title as: suicide is the end product of being able to think.

For me this sounds like a big confirmation bias. The same old perception about suicide and suicidal people albeit labelled in a different package! He confused the state of suicidal people as the cause of their suicide. Desperation, lonliness, pain, declining mental/cognitive functions are the results of many other real life conditions ,many times with no solutions. They don't necessarily cause suicide.
