Meaninglessness

Existence is absolutely meaningless

In 2022, we have the misfortune of living on a dying planet. Humanity is destroying the Earth through pollution and carbon dioxide emissions and when the population increases, the carbon dioxide emissions also increase. Climate change is only a symtom of the underlying problem: overpopulation. At the same time, a nuclear war and World War III are threatening. We live in a world of suffering, overpopulation, global warming, injustices, world poverty, wars, war refugees, climate refugees, extinction of species and starvation. When the Earth´s glaciers have melted, the sea level will rise eighty meters. Our industrial civilization is a complete failure. Saving the Earth from the climate apocalypse would require a complete reinvention of humanity. Living on a dying planet is not enough, people are also tormented by their own sufferings with health problems and diseases.

Maybe you are chronically ill. Or maybe you have nothing left to live for. You know that you must die anyway - so you think that maybe it´s better to take control over your own death. Why should you suffer for months, years or decades in meaningless suffering? But the fear of death is stopping you and therefore you chicken out every time you try to attempt suicide. The reason is that our body doesn´t want you to die. Fear helps us to survive. You would have died a long time ago if you weren´t programmed to live. Fear is an unpleasant feeling which we don´t want. Physical and mental pain are also unpleasant experiences that we want to get rid off. When we experience pain, we try to remove it. Medication can relieve pain, but often you have to increase the dose for the medication to have the same effect as before. But when all the aids of life fail, death may be the only solution. You want to take away the pain. You want to die but you can´t kill yourself. You have ended up in catch-22 - a situation of conflicting rules which make it impossible for you to escape from the situation. You are in the worst situation of your life. The solution to this problem is to introduce human euthanasia for anyone who wants it. But that change in the law may take decades or perhaps human euthansia will never be introduced. So how do you get out of this situation yourself? Maybe it´s about mathematics: pain > fear = death. However, if you could live in a perfect world without injustices in a beautful beach house with a young, beautiful and healthy body and with a lot of money - would you still be suicidal? Think about it: Do you want to die or do you only want to take away the pain?

I actually want to die, more than anything. It's all that I've ever wanted. Existing is not desirable in any way and I don't want any kind of life. I just want to be able to permanently rest for all eternity, and I see existence as being an useless burden, to die is ideal as it's freedom from all future problems and torment, and to die removes the cause of all problems in the first place which is life itself. There is simply no value to suffering, slowly ageing and deteriorating. Life is really a horrific thing and I believe that at least for me the sooner to die, the better but as we all know dying is not straightforward. Life itself is painful, and life is the true problem so only death could bring me the relief I wish for.

I can't speak for other people here, but it's definitely about the pain for me. If the world were kinder, more accessible, more correct, more upright, more understandable, less risky, then I would feel more comfortable existing. But it isn't. The world is a fucking hellhole when you're autistic, have severe depressive episodes, have bad OCD, and have all manner of trauma and triggers from PTSD. I have suicidal thoughts at least twice an hour, and traumatic, painful, and embarrassing memories keep floating into my head. It's a never-ending nightmare, and I want it to end. That's why I'm suicidal, and I fucking hate myself for not going through with it.

I'm just unhappy with my life but powerless to change it. Because my circumstances suck it causes misery. So I guess that is painful.

Suicide is not always necessarily an act to escape pain. There are many philosophical and rational reasons for why one's life may not be worth living, no matter how fulfilling or miserable the present state. For one, I've always instinctively knew that life just wasn't for me.

I've never wanted to live since my earliest childhood memory, even before I knew suicide was a word. I hung myself when I was thirteen after a wonderful day after school. This was not the result of any impulse, stressor or escape from any abuse. No, I was a normal kid, and all along instinctively knew that life was not for me. Unfortunately the pipe gave way and I hit my head on the nightstand on the way down and my parents found me. The next failed attempt was in 2015 during one of the best and most monumental weeks of my life. No matter what how good or what time, even in the best of times, life will give you priceless euphoric experiences, with the objective to rob you of them, and sink your ship to crushing depths furthest vertically than you've sailed horizontally.

Life, an involuntary happenstance of existence and experience, is not for everyone. Just like being forced into a persistent experience of unwanted sexual advances, being forced to play your least favorite sport or any other unfulfilling routine labor - is not for everyone. Sure, you can try to make the best out of it. Let those who try, keep trying, marching nowhere fast to cloudy optimistic beats. I say that's cute, but no thanks - I'm opting out.

To me, suicide isn't about simply stopping my pain. It's ultimately about freedom -- freeing myself from this cruel and unjust world.

I'd say that it's mainly to take away the pain of mental illness. But I also despise this world and life itself from an existential point of view.

Absolutely agree, at least in my case. For me the pain is self-hatred and trying to deal with it and being way too tired to deal with it. It's funny to look back on different phases in my life when I was suicidal and although the main problems that stressed me were always a bit different, the one issue that played a major part every single time was self-hatred. When I have less trouble with self hatred I don't want to kill myself.

stephen hawking said back in 2016 we had 200 years at best to get off the earth into space if we fail todo so we will be stuck on a dying planet with little to no resources left i can't see us making it i just feel this is all going to be for nothing in the end

Yes, absolutely. Trouble is- I think pro-lifers often use this phrase to actually mean- suicide is an over-reaction to pain- bit like taking a sledge hammer to a headache.

What they fail to really appreciate is- not ALL problems and pain is fixable- not without a shit load of money to pay for the resources and support everyone would need to make them 'better' and maybe not even then. People are only choosing death because they can't find a way of making their life better. They can't make the pain stop, so death looks like the only option left.

That said- even if I was promised a great reincarnation (not that i believe in it), I'd pass. I'd be willing to make this life bearable enough to get by in it if I could get access to the right resources- because I don't want to hurt the people left behind by CTB. If it came to a new life with no blemishes- I simply wouldn't believe it for a start but still- no thanks- I'm done.

Same. I'm also afraid of aging and the pain and misery that comes with that. I'm middle aged and already think life has little to offer me at this age
