Is committing suicide by provoking the police to use lethal force viable I was thinking of waving a knife around and geting the cops to shoot me I imagine it would be a relatively painless and quick death I live in Canada so I don't have access to firearms and I don't want to try to hang myself because I'm scared I might fail and end up In a much worse today than I currently am

There have been a few threads asking the same thing in the past, it might be worth having a read through some of those. I'll link a few of them for you, but if you're interested in finding more threads here's the link to the google search I did, with all of the results from this website.

My brother did that two years ago. Please reconsider, from what I understand the two policemen that gunned him down, one is still in therapy. I love my brother to the moon and back...but taking two innocent people along isn't right .

Why don't you have access to firearms in Canada? Do you have past offences that ban you from owning?

Don't do suicide by cop. First of all, the things you worry about with a failed hanging can happen with trying to get police to shoot you too -- if you survive the shooting, and sometimes people do, you may have anything from brain damage to paralysis or some form of lifelong internal damage. You are also risking traumatizing both the officer who shoots and any bystanders who witness it, and causing a tremendous drain on resources.

To me, a pretty simple rule of suicide is this: don't involve other people in it unwittingly or unwillingly. Your choice to leave this life is yours, but outsourcing the trauma onto others is a shitty thing to do. I'd recommend just spending more time here researching methods and deciding which you think are workable in your situation and for your wishes, and then preparing accordingly.

This is a good point. I actually have a friend whose younger brother tried this in Canada. He figured waving a knife around would be enough for them to shoot him but what he didn't think about is that those policemen are not American, 6 cops surrounded him and ended up beating the shit out of him with batons and flashlights, not even one of them had drawn their firearm lol.

Too bad you don't live in the US, you'd have a better shot at this working out lol! But seriously cops here are much more likely to shoot you.

I think cops in America are more similar to professional gang members, extortionists than people who really protect and serve.

They certainly take out bad guys which we need but also commit a lot of crimes. One of the groups I have least sympathy for. Cops ruin lives on a daily basis and need to experience pain themselves to induce change. Their cover up culture is repulsive. On the spectrum of morals this is more complicated than others and something I'm not at all against.

I honestly don't see cops as human as other people and as far as I can tell the feelings mutual.

I'm sorry to say but if you don't see cops as humans because of some other bad cops than you're retarded, there's no way around it.

With that logic white people aren't humans because some of them owned slaves.

Black people aren't humans because some of them comment violent crimes.

Middle Easterners aren't human because some of them kill in the name of their god.

Native Americans aren't human because some of them rape their family members.

That amount of old, young, children, toddlers, black, white, Hispanic that are helped and saved every year vastly out weighs the number of cops that suck at their job.
Grow the fuck up.

Whoa why so triggered? Check your reading comprehension. I never said they aren't human. As far as groups of people they're very low on my totem pole of value. You don't choose your race. You can choose your profession. I think police work appeals to a disproportionately abusive part of society. Causing a lot of disproportionate harm under the guise of immunity. They are absolutely the last people who I would give a fuck about my suicide affecting. Sorry pal

Read up on the Stanford prison experiment. It's quite human, disappointing and the effects are played out everyday. People change. The blue line and cop culture is dirty. Higher standards need to be practiced.

You are far more likely to fail doing this than hanging just fyi. You will just get tased, tackled, possibly pepper sprayed and then locked up for several weeks. Might end up getting shot too, not a kill shot though, it'll be a leg or arm shot.

you would have to be in a country with very "soft" laws incase you fail.

in a country with strict laws you could get a big prison sentence if you fail.

very risky.

You have to take into account that you'll be involving an innocent cop, or two, into something that can take a toll on them too. Think about the officer who'd shoot you down and how it could affect them (killing someone can be very traumatizing). You know what's more? What if you don't die and end up seriously hurt and in jail? I don't think it's a good choice.

Doesn't matter who the person is, if you know that you might fuck someone's life up because of your decision just because you think they're bad people, that makes you a piece of shit, no way around it.

I'm sorry there are countless instances of this in different contexts across the site. I'm pro-choice and not a piece of shit. Suicide negatively impacts plenty survivors, not all and mainly the family. Almost every person here has calculated pros and cons in a similar way just like OP is. Your presence on this site is a hypocrisy to the way that criticism was presented unless trolling.

There's no way to predict the impact on a single cop. I also don't believe they operate within a trustworthy culture and as stated do too much harm. They signed up to carry that gun and everything that comes with it... :(. My main point was of all the people whom a suicide could negatively impact cops are the least of my concern because I think others deserve more consideration. I wouldn't actively choose this method but don't consider it egregious compared to some others.
