Only way this works is if you remove the catalytic converter, which will make the car extremely loud. I'm mechanically inclined enough to know how to do it, but alas I don't have a garage. I also doubt newer cars can even make enough CO even without it, especially if it's a small engine.

The key is to reach a ppm concentration high enough, where side effects are either nonexistent or minimal.

Yes, however, most are equipped with an integrated carbon monoxide auto-shutoff system. Luckily the function can be bypassed with relative ease.
