"Coimisiún na Meán [Ireland's internet regulator] said it is "actively engaging with the service in question" [SaSu] and is reviewing its compliance with the EU Digital Services Act.
Under the Act, online platforms are generally regulated by the Digital Services Coordinator in the EU country where they are headquartered or have appointed a legal representative.
However, where a platform has neither, any of the EU's 27 national coordinators, or the European Commission, can exercise powers to regulate it.
The spokesperson said that, following engagement with other European regulators and the European Commission, Coimisiún na Meán's supervision team is now in contact with the service.
"Under the supervisory model of regulation, Coimisiún na Meán first engages with services on issues of concern," the spokesperson said.
Where those concerns are not addressed and there is evidence of a possible breach of the Digital Services Act, the matter may be referred to the regulator's investigation and enforcement teams for a formal investigation, the regulator said.
Coimisiún na Meán also confirmed it can apply to the High Court for an access-blocking order, although the spokesperson stressed that this power is available "only as a last resort"."
