Hi, I have an 18mm rope but I am wondering if this is too thick and will cause me to suffer for longer. Should I purchase a 12mm one to use instead?

It depends on your body weight. For me, 90 kg a 20 mm rope was suitable to pass out within 5 to 15 seconds, when hanging full.

You should try to put your weight for 30 minutes to be sure

Check a strength chart for your rope.
If you cannot find that, tie one end to something solid, grab the rope with both hands and see if it will support you.

I'm 60kg. Would 12mm be better for me?
If I were in your place, I would take the 18 mm rope, it will be less painful. In the very unlikely case, that you don't pass out within seconds, you can climp up the rope.

I am not worried that it will not support me. Both the 12mm and the 18mm are jute ropes that are very strong and will hold my weight with ease. I am worried that if I use the thicker 18mm rope I will be conscious for a longer time.

Yeah the 18mm will definitely more comfortable. I just hope it will not stop me from passing out.

As long as it tightens easily, you should be fine. (or not)
