I know someone smart told me on here. He often visits a specific news outlet. And 99% of all articles are total nonsense and propaganda. But a small share of articles are really on point and worth the buck.
I have a similar relationship with the news outlet where I get most of my articles from. It is a Swiss newspaper that is very conservative. I don't pay for it though...I wouldn't feel comfortable paying for it... It spreads a lot of right-wing propaganda. It is less blunt but more in a sophisticated way. A little bit like Unherd. The international reporting is very strong. Even though the pro-Israel coverage is a complete joke. But that's not uncommon where I live. The US and Asia coverage is very good. They have more correspondents compared to many other outlets. And some articles (especially the guest commentaries) read like short academic essays. I try to understand the narrative from the far-right reading this nespaper and how the far right in Germany became so popular. ANd I think this newspaper (and some other outlets) play a huge role in that. The newspaper was pretty early in supporting the AfD narratives. It is a good newspaper to understand the right-wing culture war. And the outlets often portrays a narrative that contradicts my own worldview. I try to enhance my bullshit detector reading the outlet. Though increasingly I have the feeling it is a waste of time. I stopped reading articles that were in favor of fossil fuels and against green energy. Most of the articles read like they were sponsored by lobbyists. One can argue about small nuclear reactors...but personally I came to the conclusion the Chinese approach is so much superior to the American approach to energy. I think the green energy supply is a real advantage for China in the geopolitical competition for hegemony. I think there is a lot of fearmongering about immigrants from this outlet. And blatant agitation. I think though this issue is important to understand the mechanisms behind polarization and how scapegoats are used. Many people criticized me for reading that outlet. For me it is a counterweight to all the other outlets I get my news from.
I watched RT russia and Fox News in the past to get a glimpse of that reality. But I quit. My favorite outlets are specialized journals where researchers write to bridge the gap between mainstream media and science. There is a leftwing journal (Die Blätter) that is pretty good at dismanteling right-wing talking points and narratives. Though, maybe the leftwing intellectualls made mistakes themselves so that they lost the hegemony in the public discourse.
I think most outlets I get my news from cater to specific emotions and feelings I have. For example excitement, a good laughter (Youtube), feeling the belonging to a community. moral condemnation, the feeling to be a little bit smarter after reading/seeing the full picture in a clearer way.
I think many people consider their favorite outlets as the arbiters of truth. While criticizing most other outlets as propaganda....
