I want to do something this evening and I just want to ask a few questions before. How high up should the support be? And how thick should the ligature be? I was planning on using a computer cable, but I'm not sure. I'd prefer to lose consciousness in under a minute. It's fine if I'm suffering before that.

The most important thing for the ligature should be that it will hold your entire weight for atleast 1 hour, which is unlikely for a computer cable.
I really hate to be this guy but you really shouldn't improvise with CTB like this, life sucks but it sucks 10 times harder when you're in a vegetable state.
Just wait a bit and go buy a proper (about) 10mm thick rope that doesn't stretch too much and has tensile strenght atleast double your weight.

agree. I have an extension lead that's 8mm and even that I don't trust with partial let alone full lol. Definitely want a strong 10mm+ strong enough rope. Good advice

Hardware stores should always have ropes available. If you live in the us, i'd imagine even places like walmart should have something.

should work but a smoother synthetic rope is probably easier to knot and cinch down. Just stick with 1/2" or more. I think the working load limit is half the break stength. A knot or tight bend can reduce the rope strength by 40%. Mainly just dont tie it over a 'sharp' edge without protecting it. Use real knots dont make one up.BDSM rope on Amazon will also do the trick, that's what I got

Hanging suicides can be improvised in interesting ways.
For example, jazz drummer Ben Pollack (1903-1971) hanged himself with a belt which was tied around a shower curtain rod, at least according to his death certificate. This was almost certainly a partial hanging.
I'm not suggesting you to just rip off this unusual way of hanging, but apparently it worked for him.

As long as it can surely support your weight, it should be good enough. Also make sure the rope is tied properly, so it won't untie.
