Semi-Professional Disappointment

Hi all

So I'm planning to jump from Beachy head in Eastbourne sometime in late August/ early October. It's one of the world's most famous hotspots due to the sheer drop from the cliffs to the beach and there are very few reports of people surviving the fall.

My only concern is that, due in part to the sites publicity, there a many police and Chaplaincy Team patrols actively looking for jumpers. I'm worried that I may be found before I can give myself the final push over the edge, or worse, back out (which I've done before attempting to jump in London) and still be noticed.

I've tried SN before, but my mum found it (and my dad knew why I had it) and since I've been out of employment for so long, it's not an option anymore. Partial suspension is a tempting option and I've tried it before, but I couldn't get over the SI kicking in. I've tried to find other drops in the UK but none can match the near certainty of death that Beacy Head has.

If anybody has some advice, information on different sites in S-E England or another method, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you in advance

People have in the past been caught up there by authorities. And the common theme seems to be that it's because they're hesitating, and stay there for a bit. If you know that you won't just be able to go straight there and jump right away, that might be a problem. This is probably true of many of the high jumping spots in the UK - as I'm sure you wouldn't be the first to jump from there if it's high enough to ensure death.

I'd also be interested to know if anyone has anything to say about the time of day you go. Is it better to go at night because you won't be seen? Or is it better to go in the day, because at night someone will be monitoring the area, and will be more suspicious of you? I don't know the answer to these questions. I'm just saying that if you are intending to go this way, knowing the answer to these questions might help you avoid detection. So thought I'd mention just in the event someone else can chip in, or if you can find any information on that.

Perhaps going later at night to ensure there's no one to stop you could be a possibility.

That's one of my biggest concerns. In the past I've backed out from jumping. While I know I'm at peace with dying and can now follow through, I know it's very likely I'll hesitate and probably end up drawing attention to myself

Bring a camera along, make sure it is visible and if anyone ask you are just taking shots of the lovely scenery. No camera then perhaps an easel, a blank and some paints. Anything to use as distraction or as an excuse to be there other than what you're really planning.

It would definitely be the better option to go at night, I'm worried that will possibly make it more obvious why I'd be there in the dark

So I initially thought this. But then if you go in the day you could just be out for a walk. But what's your excuse for being there at night? I read that there are authorities roaming the area to look out for jumpers because it's such a common spot. If they saw you at night itd look very suspicious, but in the day it could possibly be explained away.

They've had so many jumpers by now that if other people are assuming they can go undetected at night, I'd not be surprised if they increased patrols in the area at night to prevent this.

Again just speculating on my part - but I just wouldn't assume night is safer unless someone else knows more about it and can verify.

Also, I dunno if I'd wanna jump on a dark night. You supposedly have to jump on a certain spot, as there are parts you can jump where you could hit something on the way down, which could possibly break your fall and cause you to hit something on the way down and be in tremendous pain for your last moments - or possibly even get stuck there. If you have a google there are some instances of this. I read the other day about a base jumper getting stuck.

My advice would be if you're going to do it at night, at least visit there once before in the day to scope it out. Probably a good idea to do this even if you're not doing it at night tbh.

That's actually a really neat idea could definitely save me from an interaction with police

I'm worried that there will almost definitely be others walking around at day or tourists taking in the scenery. I wouldn't want traumatising anybody or have a child watch my death be my final act

I guess I assumed authorities would be gone soon after dark, but I also don't know the area as well as you, so my bad on that.

Totally appreciate that. But if you have a long walk up and down, won't you just look like a tourist passing by? And if someone is watching, you can just walk past and come back in that direction again in ten minutes. If you go on a rainy day when it's not so busy maybe?

Don't apologise
I would almost certainly do it at night to avoid traumatising anybody anyway

i like @LostandTired 's idea of having a camera. Also, dress like you're just out for a ramble, including a small backpack and trekking pole. And of course, don't give off vibes as to your true intention.

If you're dead set on doing this at night OP, you could always go in the day, just like this user has said, and scope it out so you know the area well, and then come back at night.

A good idea, but a lot of people visit beachy head and rain usually doesn't dissuade the British :P

I'd imagine it's be a lot easier to find a quiet spot during a rainy day though so it's definitely something to keep in mind, thank you.

According to this video counselors are there 24/7. I'd imagine they would be even more suspicious at night. Watch out for the red polo shirts!

That's a very good point, would also give me some time to take in the view aswell

My boyfriend and I are planning to visit Beachy Head in October on our way from Hastings to Brighton. I won't be taking the plunge, but definitely crawling to the edge and taking some photos (hopefully to share here). I thought I'd scope it out just in case I ever chose to go that route.

My advice (if your absolutely sure and determined to CTB) is to visit the pub onsite and joke and make merry with tourists, this makes you look less suspicious. Take a picnic basket and sit and relax, not too close to the edge, to deter the attention of the rescue teams. That way you can contemplate your decision in relative peace. Different hours of the day will have different numbers of rescuers, nighttime will be somewhat tricky because they're on the lookout for torches/Mobile phone lights. Please also consider if at all possible, to CTB away from as many tourists as you can. Your final moments should be in peace without gawkers and people yelling.

The only other place I know of to CTB with an almost certain death near London is Hornsey Lane Bridge, though I'm unsure what the barriers to a successful jump there would be.

Regardless I wish you peace in your decisions, take care.

This is why I think it's important to only do it there if you are confident that you can just run and jump. Don't want to get stopped by one of those buggers and end up getting rumbled.

Always got to love the pub haha
I think taking in the view with a picnic late during the day would be a good idea, and then jumping in the evening would give me a lot of time to reflect

Thank you for the advice and I hope you and your partner enjoy your trip there:heart:

Good advice and replies here. You're very brave for jumping; I could never bring myself to do that. The thought of free-falling off a cliff and the heights terrifies me. As others have already said, I wouldn't do it unless I was absolutely sure of my decision. I like the idea of scouting out a good place beforehand and pretending to be birdwatching/having a picnic/painting/photography/etc. on the edge so you won't arouse suspicion. This way, you'll have time to think about your decision when you're at the spot. If you truly decide to go through, I would wait until there weren't any people nearby, close my eyes, and run as fast as I could towards the end of the cliff. This will make it easier for yourself and others. I pray that you find peace and eternal happiness in the afterlife.
