People who really don't understand anything about mental illness and tell you,

"Listen, you have to be positive, see the bright side of things, have confidence in yourself, relax"

and all these absolutely useless things

its performative and cheap care

I'm going through this with my psychologist. She always brings up this idea of changing the strength of my thoughts. She even called me weak in our last session. The problem is that I'm skeptical about positive thinking. I don't believe that thought is capable of changing the reality that exists. Thinking positively that I'm not depressed won't change my diagnosis of severe depression; on the contrary, it will only mask my condition.

I've never had therapy but can't tell you how many times I've been told to "snap out of it" by my family - as though it's a choice.

Toxic positivity is terrible. Like telling a blind man to see again by being positive. These people have no empathy at all.

Sometimes people don't understand that in some mental illnesses, it's not about *fixing* It
Its about *managing symptoms*. Lots of people don't understand some are permanent.
And it's fairly difficult to manage sometimes.
I've personally been told to do just the typical "eat right and exercise" despite doing that my entire life.
Some people have such a strange view on It. It's lack of understanding, but If you try to make them understand,
they get confused, or blame you.

I went to the doctors recently for a routine checkup. I told them I was anxious. As she put the heart rate monitor on my finger, I panicked. Her response? Telling me repeatedly to RELAX.

I feel for you, OP.

Yeah, some doctors are awful. One told me, an agoraphobic, to go walk the dog every day... 🙄

I have schizophrenia and people are clueless about it. When I have symptoms arise for whatever reason, it never fails to elicit negative responses.

"how about you going in a walk?", "ever tried exercising?", "did you try travelling?"

I did all this, plus treatment, and I'm still miserable.

I guess many people confuse feeling down with being depressed.

my god. i am surrounded by these types of people. some of them mean well, but come across as insensitive. others just straight up don't give a shit and think you're faking it, being overdramatic, etc.
people have told me i'm "lucky" to have a mental illness so debilitating i cannot leave the house to work. i'm lucky to have people who care about me enough to support me, not lucky to be essentially bedridden and completely isolated from the world by my own fucking brain.
i could go on and on about countless instances of people saying stupid shit about things they clearly do not know enough to speak on to me. not just about my mental health, but about those of others around me too. (i.e., "eating disorders just kinda go away when you turn 20," "just stop doing your compulsions, it's all in your head" "i think you have an anorexia-ism, not that you're anorexic, but that sort of thing.")

To be honest, I'd argue it's worse in spaces that are advertised as being for the mentally ill, especially online. I feel like the "normalization" of mental illness has only furthered its stigma. I see so many zoomers run around claiming to have pretty serious diagnoses like borderline personality disorder, for instance. But when you are actually in their spaces, they behave in a way that is perfectly adjusted, at least in comparison to their surrounding peers.

It fucking sucks to have actual issues. It sucks losing friends because you lashed out in anger. It sucks getting arrested because you broke something during a meltdown. It sucks so much, and the people who are legitimately ill are ostracized by these idiot upper-middle class suburbanites who just want to bitch about how much they hate their parents for breaking their Xbox. No one can be sad anymore. Everyone is depressed and disordered now. Everyone victimizes and overcompensates instead of appreciating their blessings. Now I'm legitimately depressed and paying the price for doing just that. I think that, even if life is hard, you should embrace whatever good there is to be found within it. You can still suffer and be ill while finding appreciation in what you have. Because if you don't, that's how you end up like me. It doesn't fix everything, but it's sound advice.
