Discovered a new method to make carbon monoxide
Heat sodium oxalate to (above) 290 degrees celcius.

Na2C2O4 --> Na2CO3 + CO

Many got disappointed when they realized that "zinc + calcium carbonate" need heat above 499,5 degrees celcius. Do not despair, sodium oxalate is also very easy to obtain.

I have not tested this method, but i looks promising. (i recommend try with cheap CO meter with small amount of sodium oxalate, if that works fine it should be like a walk in the park)

Nitschke recommend (CO) concentration greater then 1 % (10 000 ppm)

Example for a 10 cubic meter room
Heating 804 gram sodium oxalate (that is approximately 344 ml) will generate carbon monoxide concentration of 1,3 % (13 440 ppm).

(actual exchange is lower then the theoretical. advice use sodium oxalate in excess for optimal result)

This is no more dangerous for others, then doing any other form of CO method (like charcoal). Nitschke suggested heat zinc and calcium carbonate in ppeh. But most of us find that rather unpractical, because u need heat zinc and calcium carbonate above 499,5 degrees celcius to generate carbon monoxide. (heaters for those temperatures are more expensive and carbon monoxide autoignition temperature is 609 degrees celcius)

a warning: when such a large amount is used, it is capable that the sodium carbonate layer that is formed, which is in contact with the container, will prevent the upper layers from heating up and this would undermine the method. ideal would be a large container

I found this on Wikipedia. Although this applies to ingestion, one would assume similar effects from inhalation of its toxic fumes. But, science isn't my strong point.

Rather than relying on heating elements, I'm not sure why you don't just use Formic acid. It requires no heating source or electricity.

sodium oxalate, heater and a heat resistant beaker is all you need.

I think all new methods should be properly tested so they are are safe to use, so anyone try this method should test it with co meter just like some have done with the charcoal method, but it should be equally reliable and peaceful like the formic acid+sulfuric acid method (without the acid fumes).

Rather than relying on heating elements, I'm not sure why you don't just use Formic acid. It requires no heating source or electricity.

The benefit with this method is its easy accessible and more reliable than charcoal. Aap many cant get the sulfuric acid needed to mix with formic acid.


There has been recent development in this method:

"Monoxide Magic – The dry powder generator"
Ted Ballou - one of the speakers at NuTech 2020 - created a device which works in the same way, you plug it in to the cigarette outlet of your car and it creates carbon monoxide.

It would be interesting to hear more about this invention if someone have access to or watched the NuTech conference.

I wonder if anyone here really tried to use this method or maybe combine it with burning charcoal. The heat produced by combustion of charcoal can be used to decompose sodium oxalate, so it's possible to have two sources of CO simultaneously:

2 C + O2 = 2 CO
Na2(CO2)2 = Na2CO3 + CO
