Can you expand on the 30 minute mark as well as the vegetative state? I was choked out once by a belt, not of my own doing but consensual, and as I leaned into it I slowly lost consciousness and was spiraling through a tunnel of futuristic rainbow lights like something you'd see in a Sci fi movie - I remember the distinct feeling I was heading somewhere. When the belt was removed, I was told I seized and choked and became angry. I do remember the anger that I didn't get to reach my destination. I couldn't have been in that position for more than a few minutes yet I felt so close to CTB. This has been my ideal method but your comment has me questioning it, as that is a terrible outcome.
The reason you need 30 minutes is that it's not guaranteed that you'll die in 5–10 minutes. However, after 30 minutes, it's almost certain that you're dead and can't be resuscitated. This amount of time should be enough, and includes a margin of safety.
Research studies say it takes about 10-20 minutes to fully die from hanging. If you're found within about 10 minutes, and an ambulance is called, you'll very likely survive. If you're not found for at least 20 minutes, you're most likely already dead and you can't be saved.
The reason why it takes this long is that the heart keeps beating up to 10–20 minutes from the time of hanging. Heartbeat is controlled by nerve cells that are located in the heart (called the
sinoatrial node). The heart can keep beating even if the person is already brain dead and has stopped breathing. Heartbeats eventually stop when the body runs out of any remaining oxygen. If you want certain death, you need enough time for the heart to stop, plus some extra just to be on the safe side.
