Hey everyone. First post here I think? I'm going to CTB by partial hanging sometime soon and I've been doing research. I found this rope and I want to maximize my chances of success so I wanted other's opinions on it. It's 100% nylon, says it has minimal stretch, and has a working load limit of 650 lbs (295 kg). I weigh about 290 lbs (132 kg). Based on this info, would this rope be suitable? Or should I keep looking? IMG 3633

Seems fine, make sure to find a spot where others wont find you though as it usually takes 30 minutes.
However, if someone were to find you before and take you down you'd likely go into a vegetative state.

Can you expand on the 30 minute mark as well as the vegetative state? I was choked out once by a belt, not of my own doing but consensual, and as I leaned into it I slowly lost consciousness and was spiraling through a tunnel of futuristic rainbow lights like something you'd see in a Sci fi movie - I remember the distinct feeling I was heading somewhere. When the belt was removed, I was told I seized and choked and became angry. I do remember the anger that I didn't get to reach my destination. I couldn't have been in that position for more than a few minutes yet I felt so close to CTB. This has been my ideal method but your comment has me questioning it, as that is a terrible outcome.

30 minutes alone is to guarantee nobody tries to "save" you.
You are functionally done by 5 minutes.

This is where planning is crucial. The method is sound. Your implementation needs to be sound too.

The reason you need 30 minutes is that it's not guaranteed that you'll die in 5–10 minutes. However, after 30 minutes, it's almost certain that you're dead and can't be resuscitated. This amount of time should be enough, and includes a margin of safety.

Research studies say it takes about 10-20 minutes to fully die from hanging. If you're found within about 10 minutes, and an ambulance is called, you'll very likely survive. If you're not found for at least 20 minutes, you're most likely already dead and you can't be saved.

The reason why it takes this long is that the heart keeps beating up to 10–20 minutes from the time of hanging. Heartbeat is controlled by nerve cells that are located in the heart (called the sinoatrial node). The heart can keep beating even if the person is already brain dead and has stopped breathing. Heartbeats eventually stop when the body runs out of any remaining oxygen. If you want certain death, you need enough time for the heart to stop, plus some extra just to be on the safe side.

Sorry I took so long to respond.
It seems like your question has already been answered but I've had a friend who had also tried the belt method multiple times. Every time he tried it he said he had a similar experience to yours but always ended up waking up with a pounding headache almost like his head was about to explode.
Hope I helped a bit.

No worries! And wow, to think I assumed I had an original experience 😂 this is great info though. I'm looking more into good ropes and will not be using a belt for this purpose

Do knots reduce the rope's strength?
Yes, but knowing the Working Load Limit (WLL) of your rope you'll be able to maneuver safely. If your rope is new, even better.

Article:
Essentially every knot that you tie in a rope will make the rope weaker than it is by itself. This is because knots cause tight bends in the rope whose outer circumference is greater than the inner part. This causes the rope to load unevenly, technically loading the rope across it's width when under tension, instead of it's length which completely undermines it's strength. This uneven loading is what makes all the knots decrease the overall strength of the rope at the knot.

Someone made a chart.
It might help.
Remember, no drop reduces stress on your entire setup.

Technical efficiencies of common rope splices knots bends and hitches effect of knots bends ch

Don't you have to divide the breaking load by 7 to know how much weight it really supports, example? : 295kg ÷ 7 = 42kg
I read it from @tempest_

Breaking Load/ Ultimate Load/ Breaking-Tensile Strength & Working Load Limit (WLL) are not the same. Read the first hyperlink I added in the previous post.

The ropes on the label usually already have the WLL printed on them, you don't have to do any calculations.

However, if the label says: Breaking strength (also called: Breaking Load/ Ultimate Load/ Breaking-Tensile Strength), then you'll need to calculate the WLL yourself (which is rare).
