Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Yeah, not exactly good people to look back on, but their suicides in the context of their rage are quite memorable.
I suppose Elliot Rodgers can be added to that list as well.

Similar to poor Mr. Dwyer's death, a young television news reporter by the name of Christine Chubbuck committed suicide on live television in the mid-1970s.

The actual footage of the event is locked in the vault of a law firm somewhere but here is the film version of what happened. The a actress who portrayed Ms. Chubbuck must've been given permission to watch the footage.

(Because of the subject the film dealt with the film never got the acclaim it deserves and the British actress who played Ms. Chubbuck did an excellent job, this was a great movie and it handled the topic of suicide really well. Clips of the film can be found on YouTube.)

I really wonder if the girls with the perfect lives had ever gotten help? The thing about people who are very successful, such as the med students mentioned earlier in this thread, is that there are almost always problems at home or outside their area of expertise. And because of the high pressure, there is either no way to get help (parents refusing, no time to do it) or they feel like they don't need it. Sometimes they don't identify that their feelings aren't normal. I think that's the population that benefits most from therapeutic intervention. The earlier the better. But you can't get better if you have a shitty family who are responsible for your problems.

There are two suicides that stick out to me. The first is kpop boy group member Kim Jonghyun of SHINee. I love SHINee. I never liked boy groups since I'm a girl group kinda gal, but they were one of the only boy groups I would listen to. Jonghyun was my favorite member and I loved watching his interviews and variety appearances. It was so shocking when he died. I always feel sad to listen to his voice singing SHINee's debut song, Replay, which is my favorite song of theirs. I can only imagine the pressure he was under, and how he had to go to work every day and look ok for his fans, the company he was under, and his loved ones. He had been suffering from depression but I never thought it'd come to that. He was a true artist.

I also like this really niche indie music scene that I won't name since it would identify me. But there are people who make music in the scene, and never reveal their voices or faces. There was one producer who was really famous for his series of songs where he would redo the same song over and over in different ways. I listened to that series of songs back when I first got depressed. He was a young guy, so extremely talented, and he always put out great songs. He was a legend within the scene. He died suddenly a few years ago. His family didn't reveal the cause of death, but he uploaded a song 30 minutes before he died, and it had very suicidal undertones. The last line of it described getting low points on a test. I don't remember off the top of my head if he was a senior in high school yet, so if it was a direct reference to his circumstances (he was Japanese and they have a really high-stakes testing system to get into college) or to life in general. I cried a lot listening to that song since the year before I had almost commited suicide myself, I'd listen to his songs on repeat to feel better. He was so, so talented. Apparently he spoke to other producers in the scene and would describe feeling hopeless because he just wanted to make music. I wish being talented was all he could've needed. I still listen to his music when I'm sad, especially his final song.

It said it took two days for cardiac arrest from 5 bottles of N! An interesting fellow it sounds...lots of bad shit. His note:

Dear World, I am leaving because I am bored. I feel I have lived long enough. I am leaving you with your worries in this sweet cesspool. Good luck.

Martin Manley 1953-2013
Martin Manley set up a website explaining every detail of his decision to kill himself. Then he killed himself.

Forgot this one. The website he set up is now some cybersquated as a honey-pot for malware, sadly, so don't go there. But a rather crude version of it can be accessed here:

You have to click around multiple times to get anywhere, but it looks like the text and most of the images are still there.

At the time of his death in 2013 the degree of censorship by big tech of the teh Interwebz was nowhere near as advanced as it is today, so a fair degree of "what about the children" tripe can be read in the coverage of his death and the existence of the site.

TBH he comes across as kind of an arrogant douche. But the way he ended his life makes sense to me, doing it in front of a police station and calling them right before he did it. Minimal inconvenience to anyone, so he wasn't all bad.

Wallace E. Baker (died 1912, I think)

I first came across this a long, long time ago, when I was writing a paper for an undergraduate class in Sociology. Baker killed himself after keeping a fairly detailed diary, replete with every euphemism for masturbation in the English language. He was a lonely, sad man who both loved and hated his mother, mentioning this in almost every entry. And pretty much hated everyone and everything else, everywhere he went. He threw himself off a bridge and drowned, ultimately.

The Glebe 1913/11 (Vol. 1, No. 2): Diary of a Suicide by Wallace E. Baker
(Link is to Gutenberg, where you can read it for free. It is in the public domain, so no piracy concerns.)

Oddly, despite claiming to have no friends and to associate with no one, it was his friends who got the diary published. Go figure. Despite what is almost archaic language nowadays, the bitterness that was his life left me clenching my jaw by the end. Aside from the diary itself, there seems to be almost nothing about Baker on the internet anywhere. Which is weird, because I swear I remember several textbooks mentioning him and his life, including details not mentioned in the diary.

Vincent van Gogh. Shot himself in the chest, possibly in this field which he painted a few days prior. Seems perfectly dreadful for such an act.

Nick Drake. Another artist who got barely any recognition while alive, but is now quite renowned.
Nick Drake - Fruit Tree
Fame is but a fruit tree
So very unsound
It can never flourish
'til its stalk is in the ground
So men of fame
Can never find a way
'til time has flown
Far from their dying day

Forgotten while you're here
Remembered for a while
A much updated ruin
From a much outdated style

Life is but a memory
Happened long ago
Theatre full of sadness
For a long forgotten show
Seems so easy
Just to let it go on by
'til you stop and wonder
Why you never wondered why

Safe in the womb
Of an everlasting night
You find the darkness can
Give the brightest light
Safe in your place deep in the earth
That's when they'll know what you were truly worth

I've read about him...philosopher who had monotonous jobs and believed God killed himself. I couldn't find how he killed himself. How does one hang from a stack of books?

I know that people are tired of hearing this from metal fans, but Per Yngve Ohlin a.k.a Dead from the iconic black metal band Mayhem always stands out. He had once died in an accident during his childhood, he was resuscitated but ever since then, he believed he was dead. He was obsessed with death. He used to sleep in coffins, he used to carry around dead animals and smell them. He was introverted and depressed his whole life. He used to cut himself at shows and throw blood at the audience. He shot himself in the head in a cabin in the woods, where he lived. His bandmate took images of his body. You can see them if you want, just search 'The Dawn Of The Black Hearts album cover' on google and go to the images section.

I think he stood on top of a pile of his books before kicking them away after attaching the noose.

Was he responsible for the assassination attempt? Is this why he did it?
The head of Getúlio Vargas' bodyguards was the brains behind the assassination attempt on Carlos Lacerda. Vargas himself did not know about the plan, it seems, but that a man he trusted could do such a thing must have jarred Vargas immensely.

Why did he kill himself?
Because the Brazilian military insisted Vargas resign from the Presidency due to the scandal. Vargas had previously contemplated suicide when his political position was threatened. Apparently, a speechwriter helped Vargas write the Carta Testamento. That is weird, in my opinion: it is odd to use one's suicide note as a political manifesto. I wonder what the speechwriter thought. Did Vargas add the portions directly alluding to his ctb himself after the speechwriter wrote a draft?

For more on the ctb of Getúlio Vargas and the aftermath, I recommend this pdf:

The prettiest suicide. I'm surprised this verbage came out. I think it goes to show that even though 'our' culture admonishes suicide there is something poetic or enthralling about it and the reasons people do it.

I'm surprised her body looked like this falling from such a height. She definately was well dressed that day. Sad for her fiance and family to have to see such an image and it be publisized.

She jumped from the top of the H in the Hollywood sign.

It was the Empire State building. The photographer got some fame from this....location was listed. Perhaps I am wrong as her body is so intact...but that's what I read.

Thank you.

My issues have always been socially related not necessarily academic although that probably does play a role. I've generally felt like the unwanted ugly duckling my entire life and I'm not sure I'm ever turning into a swan.

I see suicide as very cathartic for me, like a strong itch I want to scratch very badly, but at the same time there's like a level of ruthlessness to me that's somehow keeping me alive. Trying to balance how miserable I feel about my existence with the legitimate enjoyment I get from intellectual stimulation from studying medicine and a lil bit of hope in the future I won't hate myself lol. I guess the forum functions as me sort of fulfilling my suicidal urges, like my own secret to keep to myself (my family and friends are aware of my suicidal tendencies but don't know I'm here).

Here's to hoping a massive dose of hallucinagens will cause me to fundamentally change how I view myself and my life in a different light so I'll stop fantasizing about killing myself hahaha.
My friend just qualified in USA. It's been brutal how they worked her - 6 days a week. But now she has vacation. She even got offered a job in Hawaii.

The psychedelics are worth a shot for sure
