So I played Sonic as a kid but as I regress to '90s video games as a supposed grownup I've been getting into Mario. I can't tell which are the better games?

For me peak Sonic was Sonic 2 and so far Super Mario World has been the best Mario game.

I choose sonic due to him being a big part of my childhood - so he will always have that special connection to me.

Sadly they ruined his character and he hasn't been the same since 2010:/ but I still play the older games.

We always had Sega consoles back in the days when they made them. Sonic was the big mascot and I loved the games immensely. I used to watch the TV show in 1993, too. In modern times I have a PlayStation which misses out on Nintendo exclusives, so still haven't broken the iron curtain of Mario.

I don't like either game series.

I tried Sonic Mania and thought I liked it at first, but after not getting past level 3 (as a person who has beaten four Soulsborne games) and the game always resetting my process and forcing me to go through the whole game again, fuck that game.

Played one Mario game on Mini Snes, it was okay, but run to a roadblock too. Played Mario 3 as a kid, never got through the second state.

There's just something about Japanese platformers that makes them impossible for me. Same with Megamans, tried to like them, been playing Megaman 3 since before I could probably talk, but no, I just never could beat even one state. Later I got a Megaman bundle with savestates and was able to pass through a few levels in a few Megamans. I even got to Wily's castle in one of the Megamans, don't remember which one.

If they A: didn't reset my process and B: had quick saves or manuals saves, I'd probably like them a lot more.

Funnily enough, that one Bloodstained game (the one which was like Classic Castlevania) was of a perfect difficulty. Felt hard, but never ran into any roadblocks. I thought it would have been ten times harder.

Wait a minute. Never thought about it, but classic Castlevania games have a really similar gameplay to platformers if you don't count the lack of jumping.

I guess what also makes Sonic and Mario harder for me, is that I think "Oh, they are just some kids's games for small children" so I play them like a baby and lose all the time, meanwhile with something like a Dark Souls game, I think "I've heard this is the hardest game ever, I'll probably die a million times to the first boss, better play carefully" and then I end up beating a lot of the bosses easily.

I know what you mean 'cause I remember back in the day but with emulators now you can quick save if you so choose.
I know that, I've used emulators for years. But after emuparadise shut down and I read that coolrom got viruses years ago, I haven't downloaded many roms. I just don't know where to find them in most cases.

When I was younger and didn't know viruses existed, I downloaded all sorts of stuff, but nowadays I'm always worrying something might contain a virus.

It's a pity, I'd love to play romhacks such as Pokemon Renegade Platinum, but have no idea what site is safe anymore.

Never heard of that emulator, I use different ones. But thanks for the website name, I'll check it out right now.

I just remembered that ad where the woman says "Vaihda Chromebookiin" but it sounds like "kroumbuukki" and that sounds like a made-up silly Swedish monster from a kid's book and makes me lol.

Wait a minute. Vaihda means Switch. Why would someone who already has a Windows or Mac or Linux laptop made in the last 5-10 years switch to Chrome?

If I can ask, why do you have a Chromebook? The only people I have met with a Chromebook are people whose parents bought them a Chromebook.

Funnily enough. I don't really care for Whyisn'titcalledLink games either unlike pretty much everyone I've met. I played WhyisitsuddenlycalledLink to the past, and it was...okay, but more like something you play for one afternoon and then never feel the desire to play it again. Cousin borrowed Link between the worlds, it was fun, I loved all the details, but cousin took it back before I could complete it. Never played a single non-isometric/"3D" Zelda though I've watched videos of them, they just don't look interesting at all. Can't understand why everyone thinks they are all great games.

Now that I think about it, Pokemon is probably the only Nintendo series that I like. I played Super Metroid and it was really good, but for some reason felt no desire to play any other Metroids. Tried the new Metroid, and it was...okay, but nothing special. Kirbies, tried one or two, were okay, but more the type that you play for one or two afternoons, think "that was fun" and never touch again. Animal Crossings aren't interesting either. Kid Icarus the new game had really bad controls. Played Splatoon when it was free-to-play for a day or two, it was fun, but not worth 60ā‚¬ and a sub. Fire Emblem, only played the Three Houses, it's been nice, but I've spent like two hours running around the school instead of fighting, so eh... I like that you can free-roam the school and talk to everyone but at this point my tendency to want to see every bit of dialogue and the school having lots of areas and billion people to talk with kinda makes it hard. Also, I want to play as a boy but date the boys. I've said it a million times, they should have some sort of "non-canon bi" option in the menus. That way characters could still be canonically gay or hetero, but offer an option to those who want to play as the boy but date the guys or as girls and date the girls. I hate how the girl looks and think the boy looks ten times cooler and fits the setting better. (Or just offer an option to make the girl wear the same clothes as the boy).

How much did it cost? I went and googled and the first Chromebook I saw costed over 700ā‚¬, which was surprising because I thought they only costed max 300ā‚¬.

It's good if it can run emulators. Btw, it's nice that there are web browser ports/emulators these days too. I've played Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire Pinball on a browser, for example. And all kinds of Dos games too. And even a Pokemon Gen 1 game on a Twitter profile picture lol. (Yes, it was kind of like "Twitch plays Pokemon" but instead on Twitter and the game screen was someone's profile picture so kinda small).

EDIT: Speaking of a DS emulator, I googled "ds emu on Chromebook" and from what I read, it might work.
PS: I wish I could add quotes when I edit a post.

I'm way more into Sonic than Mario due to preferring the music, gameplay, and characters from the former but when it comes down to it, Mario does have a sort of consistency to it that can't be beat and by staying so safe, its quality never manages to be put into question as often as Sonic is.

Good price.

Good news! I found a web browser emulator that can run DS games! Was able to play my Pokemon Soul Silver rom on it. Google "ds 44670". It does say it's meant for Iphone and Ipad but I was able to use it on Firefox on Windows since it says it can work on other devices too, so it will most likely work on your Chromebook too.

I'm going to assume you're only talking about the first few early games from each side, as there are soooo many Mario and Sonic games out now to date.

They're both awesome, it would be hard for me to pick one over the other. The first two sonic games are great, sonic might have peaked at Sonic 2 which was probably the best- but I just love the tilt-y maze bonus levels on Sonic 1, plus the nostalgia. Sonic 3 has knuckles, so it's automatically a solid contender. I feel the Sonic games have way cooler character and level designs, plus better soundtracks and story. Also, there was a specific RaDiCaL 90's Sonic cartoon "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog" that will always be an awesome part of my childhood.

That being said, the Mario games somehow remain infinitely playable, likeable, and rewarding. It might be less "cool", character designs and story to me seem kind of stupid, same with the soundtracks, but it's extremely addictive, catchy, and FUN. Also there are plenty of good early Mario games, in fact they're all good. Even Mario 2 which barely qualifies as a mario game, might even be one of my favorites because it's so whack and unusual, yet still very fun.

The Super Mario world and yoshi games are ultimately classic, and they never seem to get boring. I still fire up the old NES from time to time and whack in the original Super Mario just to practice my "finish the game in 10 minutes without dying" runs to stay sharp. When somebody wants to try an old nintendo game, I always show them Mario 3 with the flying racoon.

...At the same time, Sonic 2 remains in my Megadrive pretty much all the time, and I have a special soft spot for it. I never take it out unless I feel like playing a bit of Toejam and Earl.

I really like both.

It's just the Sonic fanbase that has ruinned my view of the character because I can't help but think about the weird stuff, like that one guy that put a virus in his fangame to prevent stealing and cheats. Or that cursed cgi movie trailer.

Gladly, the games for me are still uneffected from this.
