just watched this video the other day, this man with an "iron lung", lived most his life in this metal tube thing. doesnt seem sad and says he thinks his life is perfect.

but the thing i cannot understand are the comments in the video saying how it's "inspiring" and how the guys a "hero". whats so inspiring about it? i understand that in life when you face certain difficulties you should try and push through it, and i get the idea of being optimistic. but people have a threshold to how much they can take. how can you lose 99.9% of your ability to do anything and still think like this?

i dont got a problem with this guy, if he wants to continue to live then thats his choice. but the media and the way they pedal this kind of story, and these comments about how its "inspiring" as if we should all aspire to have such a ridiculously high level pro-life outlook, thats what holding back progress. when people want to CTB for legitimate reasons these people will say "well there are people who are in worse situations..." and so you have no right to CTB. that's the problem with these kind of things

i do think this video is inspiring, but not the way most people think. it inspires me to have a reliable CTB method ready, in case i get into some situation like this guy did (he got polio disease), i would CTB the fuck outta here.

Sucks, he can't even ctb. He would need someone. If my family left me like that I'd haunt them after death. That is no way to live.

I guess I somewhat get it. He's gotten a bachelor's degree, then a Juris Doctor, became a lawyer, published his own memoir. I have fully function of my body and haven't even come close to anything he's accomplished, including getting a degree.

I believe him when he says he's happy. I don't understand it, but I believe it. I'm sure he's inspired a lot of people to keep going and accomplish things they thought they couldn't. He can probably say he's a had a purpose in life, even if it's just helping others. I don't have that all either.

Stories like this would help me when I was younger, but definitely not enough.

I guess, but if you're in that condition, then your life is pretty much over. How can anyone be happy laying on their butt with no freedom 24/7. I seriously believe that's some hardcore COPIUM.

Since I was a kid, I've been in and out of hospitals, group therapy, treatment programs; I've met so many different types of people, including some who were really disabled.

Meeting these people showed me that some can genuinely find happiness despite their shitty circumstances. I don't know how, but it's definitely a thing.

Like I mentioned, he's not able to go out and do things, but he's still managed to accomplish quite a bit and made something of his life.

He's free in his mind like Stephen Hawkings or Charles Manson. He roams about in his dreams and imagination. He's already gone through depression and self pity and he has a level of gratitude that's incomprehensible to me. His happiness is logical though unimaginable for most people. I think I'd go through the same process.

I get it. After I go through depression and self pity I'd then see the positives ( most of which I can't see now) I'd probably see who are my real friends. If I get a partner I'm 90% sure she likes me for me ( the 10% uncertainty would be that she could possibly want to be with me cause she likes power and is crazy or she could be munchosun?) When you're in that position you'll rationalize all sorts of stuff. Better to delude yourself than having to think about not being able to wipe your own but.

There are people out there who just have that kind of mindset. I got disabled by the covid "vaccine" and am therefore active in groups that experienced the same problems. While 90% of us realized we were scammed and that Big Pharma destroyed our lives, there's like 10% of people who write stupid comments like "I'm still happy I was vaccinated because covid would be worse."

There was a guy who told me I should be happy that the vaccine "just" completely destroyed my nervous system, because having myocarditis would be worse (spoiler alert: it's not).

It's called toxic positivity. I'm fine when people tell themselves this bullshit to feel better, but once they start to project it onto other people I draw the line.

I'm so tired of everyone who claims I should not be suicidal because "others have it worse" and "it will get better with time"

No, it won't and while I do have empathy for others who suffer, I'm the one who has to live with my body for the rest of my life, I don't get a second body. How does it help me if you say "others have it worse"? Only makes me more depressed actually.

I'm done with these people. I started to block everyone with that mindset a few days ago. You can't argue with them

He did great with his situation with a great attitude. He is fortunate in one key respect, he doesn't have to worry about money, since he really can't earn money in general, though I guess he earned some with a book. But people are taking caring of him because he can't take care of himself, so he gets some positive social interaction with these people.

Whether you feel good or bad has not much to do with the external circumstances, it depends on the chemical substances in your brain.

I don't understand the hostile and cynical attitude from some in this thread. He's a perfect example of how to define your own life and not succumb to standards thrown onto you by others. If anything I find this mindset parallel to a person who makes an educated decision to end their life not due to certain temporary circumstances, but due to personal conviction that there is nothing more to live for.

The trick is these type of videos are made as little bite sized "feel good" pills for people to consume. They like this type of wholesome shit. I guarantee that he doesn't truly believe those words. He probably tells himself encouraging things as a coping mechanism for his poor situation

If he's happy, that's great. The point is that people in his condition (or really all people) need to have the option of a peaceful exit.

I get the feeling that in general this is how mentally healthy people feel about life. It's easier for them to look on the bright side of things no matter how great the struggle and how little the consolation. On the other hand, depressed people are on a whole another ballpark. Instead of an instinctual habit to make the best out of a given situation, negativity and pessimism are what come naturally. It's just way too easy to fall into despair regardless of your circumstance since a generalised sense of hopelessness has already seeped into every part of your thought process. The pessimism is there as a default response to every stimuli and it's very difficult to change that. It's very difficult to fix a depressed mind because the very source which you draw upon to face the vicissitudes of life is compromised. Therefore I cannot imagine being this man and wanting to continue living on.

I hate this shit because he plays perfectly into anti-choice arguments. They'll use cases like his as their 'proof' to claim that all grievances against life are unreasonable. When in fact he's just as extreme as us, but lying on the opposite end of the spectrum.

It is so hard to believe that someone is happy in that condition, but I guess that everyone is different and we all have different limits as to what we can cope with. However to me it is absolutely horrifying that the human body is capable of torturing us like that. Such a unfair life and hearing about stuff like that just makes me want to leave this world even more. Euthanasia really needs to be legalised everywhere, it is cruel for the society to expect people to suffer such low quality lives.

As tough as his situation is, a lot of people here do have it worse most likely. He is taken care of financially and he is getting enough human attention so that he feels his needs are met. Money problems that people can't solve and problems with loneliness that people can't solve are big issues for a lot of people here.
