So we're still trying to get back the lost data and merge it. But if we can't do that, we have to make a decision. There are two backups and it comes with a question. Should we restore the data loss from 8-31 to 9-7, which means we will lose everything that has happened since or should we we continue as is, which means we will lose all data from 8-31 to 9-7. In that case, nothing would change. I know it's not really optimal but in case we have to make a decision, what would you prefer? Either way, we would have to sacrifice something.

I think it would be more logical to restore the lost data to more recent. Many people have written some things that probably took a long time and in the end they took pride in their work, to have it lost and we should honor those who have passed and had their goodbye threads lost. I understand that it would probably require another outage and make people more suicidal and in that case leaving it like this would be also desirable. I'm on the fence with this but I'm leaning more towards restoring the data to more recent but more peoples' opinions are necessary.

Couldn't the same be said about all the stuff that happened after 9-7 and now?

I would just let it be.

I guess you're right, I'm not sure. It really depends on how other will think and I'm sure those who feel the same way as I do are a minority for this poll, lol.

My case is kinda specific, but I created my first ever account a few days before the loss, then another one right after. At this point, this account has way more activity on it and I'd be pretty sad if it got deleted.

Well, my vote is to continue as is and live with the loss. As you say, @RainAndSadness - either way we would have to sacrifice something (almost autocorrected to sacrifice someone) and I agree with @Dot and her sentiments regarding many members already being adjusted to the loss, etc.

For me, most important was being able to get back in, as in being able to log back in, and once I was able, I deleted a lot of the music on my profile page which was an attempt to help lessen the burden on the server, etc. If it helped at all, it was worth it.

Is it possible to try and stack them? Or potentially manually restore important posts like goodbye threads at least? If not, chara would say, give notice so people can back up messages they've worked hard on since, then restore so they can just repost hopefully? Chara dunno. The goodbye threads should be restored if possible chara feel though at very least. People lost closure when some of those were lost. Feel like the goodbye threads are the most important. And if possible, chara would like pms back from past. (Understand that's lot less do able if only certain things are being restored manually though.) It hurts to lose memories you can't recreate with a friend who's now gone. But that's just chara take on it. Chara understand if it's not possible to pick and choose.

I lean slightly to restoration of 08/31 - 09/07 I guess but am not going to cry about it either way

Three things--some members lost their accounts, goodbye threads were lost, and 31-7 is worse than 8-11 (which is really more like 9-11). So, I guess I vote to restore the older backup.

I think the better option here would be, restore date from before. People can know that data from after 9/7 will be lost, and can be notified ahead of time to avoid any complications. It won't be a sudden loss of data like the first time. Goodbye threads from after 9/7 can be memorialized in a thread of their own perhaps. But if it comes down to it, and we have to live with the lost data, so be it. Goodbye to all those who left us in that period, and may they be at peace

Yes, I was thinking of this as well. People could be notified beforehand, unlike with the accidental data loss, and hopefully, this could mitigate the new loss.

Agreed that restoring the old data would be better. As others said, 8/31 to 9/7 is a longer period of time, and we'd be prepared in advance in the event of the more recent data getting deleted.

This is a situation where no option is ideal, but I think that the most practical solution would be to carry on with the forum as it is right now. It's been a few days since service was resumed and more contributions to the forum have been made, so some content will be lost one way or the other. Leaving the forum as is would be less work for you fine folks, and would be less disruptive for the community overall.

Loss is a part of life, and all we can do is move forward.

I'd prefer for the old data from 8-31 to 9-7 to be restored.

I could be wrong, but it seems the current backup lacks a few older threads: I noticed this darknet markets guide is seemingly gone and possibly older threads (I remember one thread was maybe called "world euthanasia" and it seems unavailable too)

I think the sensible thing to do would be to recover the old deleted data and back up the current data to restore later (too much work, I understand).

Anyway, if it were possible I choose to recover the old data and warn the members in advance enough to make a copy of the content published these days (even if it is in a TXT) so that they can restore it themselves when the migration of data is considered final.

What I've lost is chat content that I didn't make a copy of and that I could do now if I was notified in advance. This is the main difference between one option and another, that in one the old messages are lost and in the other you can make a copy of the current data.

//

Like others have said, if the old data was restored, and members were notified about the upcoming new data loss, they could simply save the threads and messages they think are worth saving. Wouldn't be much of a loss then.

I voted for the old data to be restored as well. It will be a problem for new members to have their accounts approved/registered but it would restore the ones that were lost. Like someone said, I think there is no perfect solution here. I appreciate taking the input from everyone.
-- Oh and one other thing. If the old data were to be restored thus eliminating recently approved accounts, a heads up could be given this time around to those newer members that they will need to reregister their accounts and perhaps a pin could be made site wide to that effect? :)

I wanted to add on to this about if the site is reverted to the lost data. Another thing that should be done for the currently newly registered account is to EMAIL them at their registration emails that their accounts would soon be deleted and to register a new account if they choose. This would guarantee that if they are currently absent and return to find their account missing, they can check their registration email with all relevant info :)

Since there are no other options except for the two, I chose the option to go back since there were many great threads and such that will be forever gone if it is never recovered. It would seem to be the lesser of two evils here.

However, ultimately, I would wish there to be a way to save what we have in the present (maybe have like a 3-5 day deadline so people who are posting will be able to salvage their posts or be aware to avoid posting during that time), and then temporarily close down the forum to restore lost data from the past, and after that, add the new data there. Once all that is done, then open the forum again and resume business as usual.
