I think the idea that we shouldn't invalidate other people's suffering has inadvertently started to become a way to invalidate the suffering of people who are severely mentally ill.
Like for instance the phrase, as far as i know, originally meant like just because someone is coming to work and can perform tasks doesn't mean they don't have depression.
Now I'm seeing people say things like I've been depressed and I've never missed a shower or I've been depressed and i still get my work done.
And if you tell those people that they just aren't "that" depressed they start saying you're playing suffering olympics and invalidating their suffering.
Like I'm a super clean person and I hate germs so you truly can't understand the level of internal suffering it takes me to not bath for days on end till the loint i start to stink. And i hated myself every second. I hated being alive, i hated being disgusting. But I just couldn't care enough to take care of myself. I just wanted to die.
I was in my room for days at a time without leaving and i probably got up like every 2 days to eat or drink water. Like it's not fun. It's not relaxing and it definitely isn't laziness(i don't believe in laziness as a concept anyway)
What even brought up this vent is that i saw a post by someone about how she stays disciplined while depressed. And it truly was some generic advice about dealing with consequences and maintaining your life and doing things future you would appreciate.
And i was going to comment that none of these would work for a severly depressed person and using the word disciplined, means that severely depressed people just choose not to be disciplined.
And this doesn't work because the consequences do not matter when you're depressed, there is no life worth maintaining for a depressed person and there is no future version of you to make happy when you're severely depressed.
But i know people will probably argue that I'm invalidating their depression or that I'm being pedantic, so i decided to vent instead.
