Also, can I use the (unused) charcoal that has been taken out of the bag and left in a chimney starter in the tent porch overnight/left in an open bag in the tent? I don't how charcoal works so not sure if the fact it hasn't been in a sealed bag would affect the CO.

The tent is good, it's a compact 4-person with 3000 waterproof level. Once it was erected though I noticed some problems. I specifically asked for a sewn-in groundsheet hoping for better insulation. However this tent has two layers: an inner layer which is sort of see-through and doesn't seem to be 100% waterproof and an outer out which is clearly waterproof. The outer layer goes on top of the inner layer, but there are some gaps because it is only clipped on/pegged into the ground and not sealed to it.

If anyone has any experience with tents, hopefully you'll know what I mean.

So I've been racking my brains about how to rectify this problem. I had duct tape but I couldn't really duct tape half the tent. Last night I managed to get a picnic blanket and tried to duct tape it to the ceiling but it wouldn't hold, so I took the top layer off using a mini latern to see what I was doing and placed the picnic blanket over the inner layer, then put the outer shell back on. The picnic blanket wasn't large enough to cover the see-through area.

Today I went and bought a roll of large bin liners and once I get back to the tent I'm going to try and tape them to the ceiling. Do you guys think this will work?

If anyone here knows anything about tents, do you think I need to put bin liners over the inside of entire inner part of the tent (excluding the groundsheet) or just the see-through looking parts?

Really really could do with advice, I'm hoping I can leave tonight now and I want to get it right.

Also, as I said before, my chimney starter and BBQ are both small... how many Weber briquettes roughly should I use? Should I do them all in the chimney starter at once? Last night I put seven in the chimney starter but they're pretty large so that was three handfuls - I have small hands though.

Anyone who knows anything about camping or BBQs, please help! I've never used a BBQ before.

I'm no expert but most tests in 8ch are done with a full chimney starter's worth of briquettes, so I suggest filling it up near the brim. About the tent, tape em up in excess erring in the side of caution but just the see through looking parts. The sewn in groundsheet makes it ideal too. There have been a lot of accidental CO deaths in tents, I've heard that it doesn't have to be 100% airtight, but some taping here and there is definitely a must. And yes, you can definitely still use the charcoals that were out of the bag.

Maybe it¨s been mentioned before, but concerning the hole itht the velcro in your tent, you could patch it up from the inside. That way on one would see..?

How is everything going? I've been thinking of you!

And yes, post a picture, maybe someone might have a solution.

Hope you'll get warm again soon.
Hi Mari, thanks for your thoughts.

I'm actually using a different tent now. The last one only had a hydrostatic head of 1500 and 8chan advises at least 3000 (waterproof rating) so I now have a 4-man 3000hh tent under the advice of 8chan. My BBQ bucket is small though and I'm not sure if that's a problem.

I am planning the patch up from the inside now - I did just make a post explaining the situation with my new tent and the fact I'm going to have to use bin liners.

Also, regarding pictures, my phone died overnight and when I woke up I went out pretty much immediately with it being uncharged still. I only got it charged up recently but once I get back to the campsite the wifi is shaky so I don't know if I'll be able to get online again to post pictures. I will if I can.

Also, I am warm now, bought some new socks because my feet were freezing and am currently sitting in a pub by a fire charging my phone up and drinking tea. :) Going to head back to the campsite once I've finished.

so did he die?
Unfortunately not, I realised a unanticipated problem with the tent as a said which I'm hoping to fix for tonight, it was raining like crazy and I didn't quite realise how much of a problem that would be (forecast seems better tonight)...

Grab 2 BBQ buckets just in case. If they are a lot smaller than your chimney starter, it might not be enough for all the briqs. They might reduce in size while they are being lit up but I saw the burning tests on weber briqs and they only get smaller a little bit once turned ashy gray.

I can't really if I'm going to do it tonight. Shops in this area close really early. :/ Any other ideas? Could I load up the bucket perhaps so they spill out from the metal tray a bit? I'll try to post a picture of the bucket when I can.

I'm just getting a pizza in the campsite building (managed to get wifi, yay...) and came on here to check responses after I already ordered it, but once I've eaten and stuff I'll go and experiment with putting the briquettes in, see how many fit and take some pictures if I can.

If you pile up the charcoal pieces in the bucket does that affect CO production or make it harder for the flames/smoke to finish?

Cause my bucket will probably take a full chimney starter of briquettes fine but not laid out flat.

Okay, that might work, since a tent has very little space compared to a small room to begin with. One bucket and then some should be enough, was just suggesting more to be really sure for more CO. I've seen a photo of just a tray filled with crumbled charcoal, it is a succesful attempt done in a bedroom.

It shouldn't be an issue, will still produce CO just as well anyway

My tent is a 4-person tent but it's compact, basically the 4 people would have to be pressed against each other. I can't stand up in it and I'm not exactly tall.

OK, I'll ask flat out: why don't you mix sulfuric acid and formic acid in a bucket? Why risk that the frickin charcoal should burn a hole into your tent? CO concentrations might even be highter with sulfuric acid and formic acid... ?

Am I right in thinking I take the BBQ in once all the fire and smoke has finished? And piling them on each other doesn't make it smoke/fire a lot longer?

Sorry for all the questions! After all this effort to get it right it sure better work. If I wake up alive tomorrow (assuming I go ahead tonight) I'll be absolutely gutted. I have some rope with me so maybe I'll feel ready to try hanging myself again if that happens.

Also planning to leave a DNR sign... might try writing it on my body...

Because I don't have those things. The charcoal method is pretty popular and I imagine there's a reason for that. I highly doubt it will burn a hole in my tent. I'm using (2) heat mats underneath and when the charcoal comes in it's not supposed to be on fire.

Fuck... trying to insulate the tent better did not go well. I'm going to go ahead anyway. I just can't wait anymore. It would be a sick joke if I survive when people who don't even want to die are dropping off in tents from inhaling CO by accident.

Hopefully I die. If not, I'll either wake up alive tomorrow or be brain damaged. Hopefully that won't happen given I'm leaving a DNR sign and I highly doubt my mother would want to keep me alive for long as a vegetable.

Yes I think so. After the "blowtorch" effect while using the chimney starter, the charcoal are most likely close to being ashy gray/white, there will be minimal flame and smoke from then on.

There was someone here who had a similar setup, reached unconsciousness and would have succeeded already if only he did not get caught during the act. Goodluck and may you go through the night peacefully.

The charcoal went through the chimney starter and I transferred it to the bucket. At the time it went into the bucket, it was flaming a little but no smoke and not like a blowtorch.

Now I've just left the bucket in a wood next to the campsite (I forget the attachable handle when I went down to move it across) and I'm wondering how long I need to wait.

I also feel sort of uncomfortable bringing it into the tent when there's still actual flames. I really, really do not want to burn to death and I'm a bit terrified of fire. It took all my nerves use the gas lighter, watch the blowtorch from a distance (though I knew to expect it) and to pour the charcoal out of the chimney starter while embers flew everywhere. And I mean tents are flammable, right?

So how long should I wait? Till the flames go out?

By the way, I did fill the starter nearly to the brim in the end. I'm wondering at what point I should take my alcohol and sedatives...

What do the charcoal looks like right now and how many minutes have passed? I looked at some photos and some glowing/embers are unavoidable. Maybe you should observe for 15 more minutes.

There was a problem uploading my file. :/ Basically they're pretty white with a sort of hot red glow around them. I have them just outside the tent now. The bucket is emitting a fair bit of heat, is that likely to be a problem? I'll put it on a heat mat but I mean in terms of melting the tent roof.
