  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

I'm not the type to feel comfortable asking for advice, and this is a very specialized question that won't apply to many people, but I will try.

When I leave, I wish to leave behind a website, containing not just what I can and wish to leave behind for this world (impersonal), but also the letters and notes I choose to leave for the few people with whom I wish to share my reasons for leaving when I did, reassurance that it was a true choice and not an act of desperation, and the gratitude and love I feel for them, for the time we spent here, but cannot share a handwritten letter with, due to reasons of distance - these files will be securely password-protected with something that only the specific person in question can know, inside non-indexable subfolders for each person, the URL of which will then be sent to the respective person via a delayed-email service, ensuring only they have access to this.

Do any of you have experience with or even neutral advice on how to best approach this situation, in regards to the hosting of such, in regards to the longevity of the site and its hosting being paid many years into the future, but also and especially in regards to web hosts who (likely) won't invade a user's privacy to the extent of going after or taking down content after suicide or such measures? I will be fully wiping any and all devices and hard drives prior to my leaving, so a VPS or self-hosting is out of the question, due to the necessity of continued maintenance without interruption - therefore, shared hosting seems like my only option.

This is an extremely specific situation and question, and I do not assume it to apply to anyone (I presume most would not leave their messages via such a route), but I felt it would be worth a try to ask, as this is unfortunately not something that can be searched for.

Not directly related but I saw a public website (since taken down/expired) left by a suicide guy. He made the website with pictures and stories of his life, starting from his birth and ending with a picture of a noose tied to his training equipment (?). It was pretty neat.

As an idea you could use Amazon Web Services or commonly know as AWS. You can host a website, have a virtual machine, have a bucket (personal hard drive) etc. They are more then suited for your needs, because they have the resources, tutorials and tools to make it happen all in the cloud. Regarding content, if its content is like this website has i don't know how you go about that because this is sensitive. But if your content is to help human kind, and is beneficial, informative and ethical then Amazon shouldn't have a problem with that.
And once you create an account the first year is free so you can experiment and choose what suits you best. As to the details and implementation i leave that to you.

Didn't know that place was even still around. I made my first website there. It was to ask a girl to be my girlfriend. I was 16 and we had dialup.

Hosting a website is cheap and uncomplicated, for example at godaddy.

With a simple directory protection you can protect directories with username and password.

If the site is not publicly visible, not much can happen at first.
Unless access to the data is requested during the investigation of the case. But even then, they will probably not be deleted.

What a coincidence, I was planning something similar. I miss Geocities and the old internet. Be aware that some hosts have rules about what content you can and can't store.
