Oh, that's only useful if you're the kind of weird that's fun and quirky. You can test it a bit, see how it goes for you.

I'm myself because I don't know how to be anyone else and it doesn't work well. Self-described weirdoes who are supposedly very understanding of others' quirks quickly stopped inviting me to things because I'm too too weird. Job interviews are going awful. I could be catalogued as an alien seeing as I don't fit in with any human.

It's a good question. In terms of finding genuine friends and developing genuine relationships- I think it's important to be as near to your natural self as you can get. Otherwise- you'll always need to be putting on an act around people you ought to feel relaxed around. It's like that wonderful phrase from Dr. Seuss:

'Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.'

That said- around people we have to be around- work or study colleagues. Even family to some extent- I think sometimes it's safer to moderate what we express- if we know some things may lead to arguments/ people taking offense. When it's people we can't easily get away from and we need to work with- it seems better sometimes to just play a role.

There again- if everyone seems to be taking offense- we probably do need to examine how we are behaving and how we treat people. Even with close friends, we may find we should bite our tongue on occassion.

When they say that they don't mean 'be yourself and also follow every impulse you have' they mean 'be yourself, while also adhering to etiquette.'

I generally cannot handle being inauthentic so I am 'myself.' As far as how that's turned out... well, it lets people see the good parts about you and the bad. For me I have people who appreciate my sincerity and concern, but it also means they get pushed away by my moodiness, and I often ruin relationships by sharing my less pleasing thoughts openly. I don't know if I can really recommend it, but I also feel like living inauthentically feels like not living at all.

no it won't always get you places if yourself isn't naturally charming and attractive. but i don't like pretending to be someone im not, and the people who i truly want to be around will like me how I am.

It probably has a higher chance of working if you're neurotypical. I'm autistic, probably ADHD too, and being "myself" seems to offend neurotypical sensibilities - enough to be subtly ostracized and pushed out of places, while being told "if everywhere you go it's bad, then it's a you problem". Don't recommend unless you're in dire need of that sweet, sweet suifuel.

I've existed for a long while, I've heard that basic piece of advice since forever. Who doesn't know it?

I'm at the end of my rope, I plan on this being my final year.

People giving generic advice instead of actually helping. It's just wasted breath.

I tried to be myself many times, I tried making friends and meeting people, but it's too hard. No one is like me, I'm so alien.

No, I'd listen to them and we'd come up with something together that might help, or I'll just listen and hold their hand if they need it.

Being myself. I'm bored of myself. I'd prefer being dead at this point.
