  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

I am a law abiding citizen and I dislike doing illegal things. It is so brutal of this society to send people to prison for wanting to die peacefully. It is so cruel.
I had this thought in mind when I watched the news. In my country many people go to prison for fare evasion in trains. It is a real problem. The expert said it is very cruel to punish people for having miserable lives because many people who get sentenced are like homeless or chronically ill.

I think this is the perfect analogy for the state how suicidal people get treated. Some people just reach their limits. I am suffering now for almost a decade of suicidal thoughts. I am just not capable to endure several new rock bottoms/psychosis. I don't care how high the sentence is. When I am cornered enough I might even would be willing to illegal action in order to die peacefully. I mean if the pain is as high as it needs to overcome survival instinct why should laws be an obstacle too great to overcome.

I think about a way to die without doing something illegal. Or at least only getting a minor punishment. This is why I would never order N. The punishment is insane. I think future generations will look with disdain how suicidal people got treated in the past. It is just inhuman.

Afaik not a single person has actually been sentenced to jail for buying N.

Unless they were accused of trafficking (buying and transporting for someone else), they all got fines and possibly a record, but that was it.

Any punishment for attempted suicide is cynical. It's like kicking somebody who's already on the floor

This is not true. In many countries, such as Germany you go to jail. Germany: 1 year or you have to pay €25.000,- fine (§ 96 Nr. 4 AMG).

Yes, we know the theoretical sentences. But those have never been actually given. One would have to have quite a record of previous charges and sentences to receive those maximum sentences for buying N.

None of the people who were charged in AUS/NZ actually received anything close to maximum sentences.

That's simply how the judicial system works. No priors and not more than a parking ticket (and let's be honest: white and middle aged) and people walk away from the shittiest things Scott-free.

Homeless and BIPOC? No such luck.

I´m talking about Europe. I even know of a case in Germany where someone got in trouble with customs and police for importing SN.

There is quite a difference between "got in trouble" vs "maximum sentence" though. Can we at least agree on that?

I do wish that we lived in a world where our right to die is respected. It should not be a crime for someone to peacefully end their suffering. None of us asked for this horrible life in the first place and without peaceful methods, people will be forced to resort to painful and risky ways. It is cruel to expect people to suffer against their wishes until old age. To me, it is so unfair how they want to deny people a peaceful exit. All life is meaningless after all, and we will all die eventually someday.

Could it be possible that someone poisoned someone else with N? Otherwise I don't see why it should illegal to buy something to kill yourself, it's your life. Bodily autonomy isn't very appreciated by the state, it would seem, I wonder why... 💉

I wouldn't look for anything to be changing, really, at least not is the US. This is a country where the sanctity of life is held in high regard, and it will be even more evident, as soon as SCUTUS overturns Roe v. Wade in the near future. The best that can be hoped for here is some type of accepted assisted suicide, but only for the terminally ill. I don't think it will ever be an option for those with depression, no matter the severity, nor will it for any other "mental" condition. It is a belief here that anyone with any sort of mental condition can either be treated for it, or can still live a life of dignity, even within the confines of an institution. They're only willing to allow the killing of certain people they find irredeemable.
