  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

There's no person/mind without the brain, which decomposes when you die. Everything about your mind can be damaged by damaging parts of the brain. You can cease to recognize faces, you can cease to know the names of vegetables, but still remember the names of tools... Damage one part of the brain and something about the mind is lost for good, damage another and yet more is lost... What do you think happens when the whole yucky thing is damaged at death? That some mysterious invisible you rises off the brain with all your faculties intact?
Isn't Sam Harris who made that argument? Think I've heard somewhere before.

There's a strong case to be made that hell exists on earth, in the lives of certain unfortunate people. Hell might be fleeting or might be a permanent feature in someone's life.

Curious to see what some of those Scholars have to say? Thanks.
I can guarantee that hell exists on earth, but the cruelty of eternal hell is far too sadistic for me to believe in or wrap my head around. On the other hand there is nothing scholarly about me....and hello.

No. It was never in the original Bible. The place that got twisted into hell was Gehenna which was a literal garbage dump and an evil place where children had been sacrificed to another god. So when the Bible talks about the burning and shit it's talking about a literal place, a garbage dump where they burnes garbage. And then people with too much imagination took that and ran with it making it into some spiritual realm.
We could partially blame Augustine and Dante for that. I'm sure there's a few others but those are the top imo.

The dualist could respond by saying that the brain is merely a host for the mind and thus limits it. Brain damage and whatnot are limiting the mind when imposed upon the mind, but when the brain ceases to function entirely the mind gains its full capacity again. There's this interesting phenomena called "terminal lucidity," where a patient with dementia or something similar shortly before they die can recall facts that they otherwise wouldn't have known. An interpretation of that is that the mind is transitioning from the this-worldly life to the afterlife.

This... planet / reality / shared experience... IS ACTUALLY HELL!!! Our souls are trapped here! When we die our souls come right back & reincarnate into a new body / "life"! We are stuck in this hell FOR ALL ETERNITY!!!

In Hinduism there is no concept of hell. Life is an eternal school. You'll keep on getting reincarnated untill you know what it's like to live as everything (human, animal, plants, etc). Apparently the goal is to achieve enlightenment.

Too fanciful & wishful-thinky for me, but whatever rocks your trailer... I can't disprove it, of course, but there's an infinite number of bombastic claims about the afterlife that I can't disprove (& that nobody can prove).

So cool & believable. My worldview is shattered.
