I think one could talk about the different niches, subgroups, philosophies, different cultural divisions and cleavages, controversial takes that are part of one's identity.
I think the notion we would like to have on here was: The debates on here showed we were rational, reasonable, the best argument wins, the most honest and evidence grounded arguments prevail.
I have the feeling though in many cases many political and philosophical takes are also a form of self-assertion or self-reassurance. And I am part of that.
For me that is striking when it comes to philosophy on here. Many people on here share a negative notion of life. Me too. But there is also aa comfort in such a philosophy. It leaves someone with a good feeling. Maybe superior to average people who are just too stupid to see the essence of life. The other side is that for many life is a gift even though don't experience it like that.
My point isn't that most takes on here are bullshit or we were delusional about life and this was just our mentally ill distorted perception. But there are not many people on here who play advocatus diaboli for the case that life can indeed be seen as gift and inherently valuable. One could argue such a take is bullshit. Personally, I am also not interested in such a conversation. Lol. But it shows that there is sort of a bubble when it comes to the discussion whether life is inherently valuable or not. From time to time you find people on here who are religious and their often isn't look life is so beautiful, just look at it from a different angle/macropicture or whatever. But they are scared of getting punished for committing suicide, being on here and so on. They arem ore driven by fear. And I think I also instrumentalized my relation to religion to regulate my fear of a punishment. While one has to emphasize that you can make some good logical argument why punishments for suicide don't make sense. But at least for my case I cannot deny there is an emotional motivation/reasoning when thinking about these topics. And also expressing my thoughts these topics serve as reassurance. One part is I don't ant to feel lonely. I want to part of a community where I am understood and we are a minority in our societies. But there is also a risk that we reinforce each others beliefs too much.
But that's only one topic. On AI usage, left versus right politics, our relation to the health care industry there is a great variety on here.
I have the feeling many times the frequency of takes is more decisive than the best argument.
I wonder whether I am a useful idiot for AI companies when I try to make nuanced takes on generative AI. And I wonder whether one could say my posts change the Overton window and move the goalpost on this issue. Usually these terms are used in the analysis of the far-right tactics. Honestly, I am not trying to do this. Lol maybe I am doing hermeneutics of suspicion on myself when I talk about my posting on here with these terms. I always search for the worst in my motives, intentions and in the consequences of my actions. And I enjoy tormenting me over it. It is a surplus value. Today I listened to a medicore lecture on modern critical theory. Lol.
I wonder though if other people could perceive me like that. Maybe I am a victim of massive news consumption and it proves that people think a lot about the topics they consume in their daily life. I don't want to reiterate some of my takes on AI. I try to post less about this topic. Even for my taste it has become too much. It is just I am do dysfunctional and I hope for a miracle. I repaeted this way too often. The outcome will most likely be a dystopia though. I know.
I think there already were interventions when single massive poster determined disucssions too much. And morphed topics/threads into pro-mortalism echo chambers. Me and some other spoke out against it. And I think there was found a halfway good compromise eventually. Even though I have to admit I don't visit suicide discussion that frequently anymore. And I cannot really assess the current state of the discussions. Implementing a recovery subforum was a good step for example. But for me I have to say I am not a positive person And I simply cannot share more positive takes on life. I ran out of that energy. But I tried to provide the community with resources in the past.
One last note: Maybe we are not as bad as social media in many instances. The algorithms on here are less polarizing. Though we have similar issues when it comes to attention, attention spans, controversial takes. I am not sure whether one could say we are anti-social media. I would not say we are competiting for who has the worst life.on here. For example we don't show our faces of us usually, our accounts are not well connected to our real identity. I think this is why one should not argue the rules of social media are just reverserd on SaSu. This would be too simplified. The answer is probably more intricate. But I don't have more energy to explain my view on it further. At least for now.
