Hello, I usually never post over here.

If I didn't have a niece, I think I'd be dead. But, one thing that I find genuinely fun is playing with my niece. She's really young and cute. But it also feels weird to be obsessed with a kid who isn't mine.

I'm considering moving closer to her (she lives in a different state), just because… it's one of the only things I look forward to. But I dont want to have to stress about getting a job, paying rent somewhere, figuring out healthcare, etc.

Any advice?

Your post made me smile. It reminded me of the influence that one of my nephews has on my life and decision to stay. He's not a nephew by family - he's the son of my friends but calls me Uncle *name*. I've known him since he was born 3 years ago and really enjoy spending time with him. He gets very excited to see me too and that feels good. He's young, excitable, keen to share his thoughts and fun to be around. I've said that I don't want kids (and I don't think I do - not sure anyone on SaSu should be having kids) and this is kind of a nice way to interact with a good kid on a part-time basis. It's one of the best parts of my life.

Advice-wise, I'd encourage you to go for the move. You've got a couple of hurdles there but nothing huge. If you're in the recovery thread and have a good reason to stay, I think you might as well move towards that reason.
There are thousands of people on SaSu looking for something that makes them happy and you have a very clear one.
You should give some considerations to what you'd be leaving behind (housing, job, relationships) but if you're on this site, I'm going to guess that you're not super connected to those things.
From your post, I see a chance for a fresh start closer to a bright spot in your life. If it goes horribly wrong and you hate it that much, CTB doesn't stop being an option.

it is so special and rare to have someone who brings meaning and happiness to life. and childhood is a special time, they grow up fast! if it were me personally, and i didnt move, i would worry that i might have regrets and "what ifs" in the back of my mind. it sounds like how you're currently living isn't bringing you much happiness or fulfillment, so i think a change like this is a good idea to consider.

i know the job market sucks right now but i think it's definitely worth applying for jobs in that area, looking at linkedin, indeed, temp agencies, etc. also, you could ask your niece's family if they know anyone who's hiring, personal connections are helpful for job searching. no matter what you decide, it doesn't hurt to at least see what options are out there.
