how to recognize a cow catcher on a train... what do they look like?

lately in public whenever i see a train, i've been paying good attention to both the train and the tracks.

sometimes i see something that makes me think "is that one of those cow catchers?" -- but not being sure if it is, or not.

can they make them sublte and discrete looking? or do they always stand out?
