I see what you're trying to say but it becomes a slippery slope when you bring up being poor/relying on welfare and whether it's worth it to "barely survive." It's not like it's impossible to be happy and poor. There's some intrinsic challenges but you could argue that every economic class faces them to some degree. Is just surviving enough though? Barely making it? In California the wait list for section 8 and low income housing is 11 years! You get $150 a month for food stamps. I spend that every 2 weeks. For SSI you get $700-800 a month. You can't even rent a tent in someone's backyard for that and if you are older over 50 and disabled there just isn't enough help for people! It's not just mental illness that keeps people from getting help.
I do remember hearing from my friends though that Medicare (or Medicaid i forgrt which one) is horrible for mental health treatment. Limited number of sessions and very few practioners take it. It's no wonder the clinics who accept it are usually the worst clinics around-- they treat the clients and their employees terribly. Poor people who need mental health care can't get the quality care they need as a result
