It's basically a prescription to go through an ego death, which I think is supposed to free one from suffering.
And according to Stan Groff, the suicidal impulse can potentially just be a mistaken 'ego death' impulse.
The issue is that killing your ego seems like a very rare achievement. I think some spiritual teachers claim that its only something that certain people will have access to in a given life time. Certainly don't seem to be getting much closer to it myself...
