Horrible jobs...one reason I will croak

Never had a good day at work. Got 3 degrees and just a handful of hellish years. Major shit. Bad all day.

Then got a few caregiving jobs. 'Helping' retarded people, crazy and also very old. Didn't last long. It was mostly sitting in hellhole apartments mute and sometimes degraded. Low pay. Very dark stories. Sometimes 10 hr shifts every second in hell sitting on shit stained couches.

Went to a temp agency. They gave me math problems I couldn't do. Said there was a job working in a 38 degree warehouse topping pepperonis on pizzas. Nope.

It's shit. Trauma. And I am labeled by my rich mom and unlike her haven't gone on any real vacation. Yet there's something fucking wrong with me.

Got a job briefly at a grocery store. Would only give me 16 hrs a week at 12 something an hour. Bagging groceries for rich people mostly.

Fired many times. Again...3 useless degrees...and for nothing.

Judged and ignored like there's something fucking wrong with me...nope...sorry. I'm better than a 38 degree warehouse. I'm just FUCKED. And leaving soon.

I couldn't agree with you more. Which is why many of us are determinedly suicidal. It's bad enough struggling with grave depression. But to not be able to stay alive b/c your alternatives are 1) be lucky (inheritance...), 2) wage slave (like you said, can be soul-crushing), be the kind of person others want to link up with (marriage...), or 3) end life b/c you can't afford it anymore? And you're right. Upward mobility has a shelf life. Studies show lifetime earnings are statistically related to FIRST job earnings. Hope something great happens for you soon.

I've seen jobs offering no pay in exchange for a room and watching their kid, 30 a day for 8 hrs for 2 weeks watching a kid, requiring significant horse experience for a horse care job at 10-20 hrs offered at 12.75-14 and hr. A library job at 12 for 10-20 hrs a week etc etc. I made 14 fulltime in 2008 and that was SHIT.

Yes-yes-yes! But too many people will do nearly any job at any pay, so employers get to pay peanuts and the rest of us have to accept what they offer. And then, if you don't have a decent-paying job, not only are you living on the edge, from paycheck to paycheck, not only are you at the mercy of employers (who're happy to break the law and abuse you--try defending your "rights" in court!), but saving appreciably is too tough. The next emergency's right around the corner. Or prices skyrocket (see post-pandemic, rents, gas prices, grocery prices...). And forget investing like "responsible adults." Forget the stock market and maybe building a nest egg over time.

I think the fortunate fuckers paying shitty wages know they are pushing folks to suicide. I honestly don't know how things keep rolling. There's frozen pizzas in the grocery stores...topped by many unfortunate cold (38 degrees) people. You mention age. I am older. So yes. EVEN SHITTIER.

I'm currently doing a night shift. I work in the care area, supporting the elderly. It feeds my depression everything it needs. It's like this job makes it stronger. I feel awkward all the time, trying to be someone I'm not. I see the people I'm supporting, just sitting in their own faeces, too weak to do anything for themselves anymore, and it becomes my job to sustain this quality of life and keep them going. It makes me question my own morals.

If that's the destination our natural course through life takes us then I fucking decline! NO THANKS!

I know I've made this about me, but hopefully, it helps you to feel less alone. Being at work, pretending for hours upon hours is crushing. And you know it only ends when you become too broken to continue, and then someone else is picking you up from your own faeces. FAN-TAS-TIC!

It's nice to hear from someone doing caregiving. It's truly a hellish job. I really feel for you and give you props. It's terrible I think to care for folks so old and not be given benefits...knowing I won't get that kind of care cuz I won't afford it.

I absolutely agree with you. In the midst of all our countries'/country's wealth, that we have full-time employed yet homeless people, that housing is both a survival requirement and an increasingly profitable commodity being sucked up by large rental corporations to be rented out well beyond the reach of many, that we have a "right to work" but no corresponding right to a fair-paying job... on and on, yes, the wealthy realize they're pushing people to suicide. And scores of reproduced studies bear this out. Want to leave yourself? Abomination! But be slowly pushed out to death due to greed of the powerful? Just the way the system works. Who the hell asked to be part of this such that we have some responsibility to stick around?

Ultimately people need money...whether that be people in their 20's or 70's. This video is sorta part of the problem. I recall a guy on reddit in his 70's working in a gas station very low wage, shitty apartment alone...planned to jump off an overpass. Videos like this sorta sensationalize the job situation. Boohoo people want to work at home rather than come in.

There's a stack of appicants for a 12 hr grocery store job in my town. There's no shortage of applicants. People need money...or they choose to die.

I do agree with you that the vid doesn't touch upon the long history of wage slavery in the US, and how corporations and the government already know decades-long stagnant (or slipping) wages can't but people security anymore with our skyrocketing cost of living. Absolutely. I appreciate that at least there's the beginning of a broader cry against unappreciated labor. Notice the jobs they mention are going unfilled aren't white-collar jobs. They're service industry jobs--low wage, low security, few-or-no-benefits blue collar jobs.
