It's so annoying that people who claim to be objective and scientifically minded caricaturize this place as a "pro-suicide" forum. Nobody here (the exception being some malicious lurkers or nefarious ex-members who have been dealt with accordingly and banned) views suicide as an epic and amazing occurrence.
The misconstruing of this group's ethos is purely emotional and not backed by any scientific rigor. This site is pro-choice, allowing people to freely speak their mind about what is a socially taboo topic regardless or whether or not they decide to ctb. Many people have found recovery through this site, while many others who had terminal or agonising circumstances have managed to find solace and companionship in their last moments, whilst greater society denies them of that right.
You can tell that this presentation suffers from both appeals to emotion and selection biases. They did not choose random sentiments from this forum to display in their report, they chose the ones that fit the angle of their narrative and did not include any thread comments that were responses to the original posts.
Notice that they did not include any of the posts about the downfalls of healthcare systems, not being listened to or helped by mental health services, sustained loneliness that will persist post-covid restrictions, or the consequences of lockdowns trapping many users in abusive home environments.
They picked very shocking and sensationalised comments, such as that wacky Bible conspiracy post, to make us all seem like nutters. Real research should be all encompassing and demonstrate the variety of data in your sample, even if that data does not agree with your pre-concieved notions of what a population should look like. There was only one comment on the entire poster that highlighted the perspective of someone who believed covid had minimal impact on their personal life/ctb urges.
That little note tacked on at the end too about how we should increase suicide prevention services for those at risk, that was just rich. Like, really? You claim to have insight into discussions on this forum, yet don't even bother examining any of the criticisms users have about current suicide prevention measures and how they've failed most of us?
This is junk science.
