Over the past year, increased regulatory pressure in multiple regions like UK OFCOM and Australia's eSafety has led to higher operational costs, including infrastructure, security, and the need to work with more specialized service providers to keep the site online and stable.

You are using an out of date browser. It may not display this or other websites correctly. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser.
It's so annoying that people who claim to be objective and scientifically minded caricaturize this place as a "pro-suicide" forum. Nobody here (the exception being some malicious lurkers or nefarious ex-members who have been dealt with accordingly and banned) views suicide as an epic and amazing occurrence.
The misconstruing of this group's ethos is purely emotional and not backed by any scientific rigor. This site is pro-choice, allowing people to freely speak their mind about what is a socially taboo topic regardless or whether or not they decide to ctb. Many people have found recovery through this site, while many others who had terminal or agonising circumstances have managed to find solace and companionship in their last moments, whilst greater society denies them of that right.
You can tell that this presentation suffers from both appeals to emotion and selection biases. They did not choose random sentiments from this forum to display in their report, they chose the ones that fit the angle of their narrative and did not include any thread comments that were responses to the original posts.
Notice that they did not include any of the posts about the downfalls of healthcare systems, not being listened to or helped by mental health services, sustained loneliness that will persist post-covid restrictions, or the consequences of lockdowns trapping many users in abusive home environments.
They picked very shocking and sensationalised comments, such as that wacky Bible conspiracy post, to make us all seem like nutters. Real research should be all encompassing and demonstrate the variety of data in your sample, even if that data does not agree with your pre-concieved notions of what a population should look like. There was only one comment on the entire poster that highlighted the perspective of someone who believed covid had minimal impact on their personal life/ctb urges.
That little note tacked on at the end too about how we should increase suicide prevention services for those at risk, that was just rich. Like, really? You claim to have insight into discussions on this forum, yet don't even bother examining any of the criticisms users have about current suicide prevention measures and how they've failed most of us?
This is junk science.

I understand why social scientists want to study us, and we are interesting group of people as we're experiencing suicidal ideation in a pro-choice and free-speech forum. They are doing this for the name of science. I just hope that these scientists will be unbiased, and does not held any pro-life opinion or organization such as FixThe26 movement because that could influence the study as personal opinions may influence the findings. I hope they will not pervert science to fit their narrative, and don't make SS as this "pro-suicide" forum where people encourage suicide. We don't encourage suicide. We're simply bunch of people who want to do our own research by finding desired way to CTB and vent.
How about studying the other millions of reasons people want to kill themselves? I hate this covid-induced, covid-centered mental health awareness, miserable people & shit lives have been around for a while you know.

I agree, I also feel somewhat of a hypocrite, some days ago trying to prevent ppl from doing it when I was feeling better myself and thought everyone trying to ctb must be stopped bc thats what God wants me to do,
But here I am today again suicidal n just felt no hope n tired with no God in sight, so I think ppl who are super against this pro-choice forum need to walk in others shoes before they judge. Also mental hospitals n doctors havent really helped me, what they are being paied for i dont know, i always felt like they dont get it, they just follow what they have read in books. Its also disgusting how some of them, specially therapists are arrogant

These dimwits, I was suicidal long before Covid, if anything it's been validating for someone like me to see how other people feel when they're forced into isolation.
I've lasted years and the common Joe/Jane couldn't even last a damn week.
(Plus my ugly mug gets to wear a mask if I have to go out or go to an appointment.)
I'm not saying the pandemic is a good thing by any means (job loss, so many dying without being able to even say goodbye, etc) but I don't know how they are deciding why someone is here, any influx could also be attributed to the recent news stories and certain member's identities going public (thanks to their family) where our site is mentioned by name, or alluded to.

That's a good lesson in never projecting your own recovery from issues onto other people and expecting they can manage the same. We are all different with varying reasons for being here. Glad you were able to come to that conclusion on your own, but sorry you are feeling worse again.

The person who posted that about SN knew what they were talking about but I dont think the people who took this data really know what to make of it. In a way this is a study of statistics. It also seems they might not be studying SS but they did do a study on suicide. I just don't understand why but maybe I'm just tired. I'm having a hard time today. I think I had a mild stroke or some thing.
As far as cov19 goes. My opinion is the entire thing was, is and will continue to be a big joke played by the same pieces of shit who have been fucking us over for 1000 years. They do not care about us. They have not ever cared about us. They will continue to harm us as long as we keep standing by and letting it happen. Fact is "they" want us to suicide. It's called "A SOFT KILL". Look it up.
The man who can feed all the people simply doesn't. The people take it out on each other. The man remains "not at fault". The people kill each other and commit suicide it their despair. It is an "indirect" death to control and depopulate or get another outcome that is beneficial for the man not the people. Our governments work together. They have been for a long long time.

They got the wrong SN. It's supposed to be "Sodium Nitrite", not "Sodium Nitrate"
Biased "science" has always been a major issue, just look at the mental health field and the garbage they base their practices on..no wonder it fails so many people.

You've got to love how they only really address COVID though, not any of the bigger (and way more talked about) problems. It's basically a whole study to say the same "your problems are temporary :)" bullshit as always
Which honestly? Isn't that surprising.

They use COVID-19 and the pandemic to invalidate any personal feelings, thoughts, or reasons to CTB. Since we are all dealing with it and this pandemic affects everyone world-wide they want us to realize that the normies are suffering with us and we "are not alone" and all the typical gaslighting horse shit. We are all depressed, we are all suffering therefore our mental illnesses are not anything special and we should "keep fighting" to live even though we are living to die. Hmmm I wonder why they aren't doing a general study on how socioeconomic status, race, employment, schooling, etc. encourage suicide by looking deep into the way our society is structured rather than trying to find one commonality that is COVID-19 and blaming that for increased suicide rates

Saying that they're giving us recognition is giving them too much credit tbh. They just saw the increased rates, went like "how can we profit off this", and made a quick 5min obviously biased 'study'. They didn't even spell Nitrite right

The little nugget of cheese next to him is a nice touch lmao
Also, for whatever it's worth, the authors are a beginning junior faculty member, two PhD students, and one guy with a masters who seems to be working as a psychologist and says is ``involved in suicide research.''
That's how the outside world sees us unfortunately.
Lots of misinformation floating around.
It's actually made me more shrewd when reading any news article or study about anything, now I am always full of doubt and double checking/cross-referencing sources.

It's a public forum and everyone here decided to post on a public forum, so I think that's just as fair as studying Twitter or whatever. And to me it seems quite a lot of "outsiders" are watching this forum closely.
"One of the most important ethical rules governing qualitative research applied to conducting field studies is that individuals must voluntarily give their informed consent before participating in a study. However, the conditions under which you may be required to obtain permission from those being observed varies. For example, observations taking place in open, public spaces, such as in a park or at the beach, usually do not require informed consent because there is no expectation that you cannot be observed. However, there is likely an expectation of obtaining consent in a bounded observational space, such as a classroom, a homeless shelter, or a hospital emergency room."

First the bias, second the misspelling, now this? Is this even an actual study or did they just take the name to make themselves seem like professionals?

I agree completely. This is very biased and unprofessional frankly. This whole thing just looks lazy. It took4 "researchers" to read 118 discussion threads and then create a graphic which 1/2 of is saying how this study is a "non-probillistic convenience study of those with access to the internet' (aka their data can't be "backed" to be trusted) mixed with OUR WORDS. The other 1/2 is explaining why they bothered to try and fail at whatever they were attempting here. This study is obviously a waste of time and the result of the "publish or perish" attitude of academia. If I, as a single undergrad, turned this in as research it would not have or would barely have passed. I know there's a paper that comes with this and I'm earnestly trying to look it up. But if it's anything like the graphic I'm sure it's useless too.
Also I find it ironic how the one positive thing about this study (the diversity of people and opinions that is provided by the internet) they fuck up by trying to paint us all with the same "these people are crazy" brush.

I'm not surprised that researchers would be monitoring this site. Where else are you going to be able to see people frankly discussing their suicidal ideations in the amount of detail that we do? I don't think there's anywhere else quite like this on the net.
Understanding why and how people commit suicide is a worthy undertaking. The mental health and psychology fields are woefully behind on this!
I agree. I think there is a lot of information here on how to improve the mental health system and address needs. I've even thought about observing my experiences from this forum and my personal life to inform some research in the area. I don't think there is anything wrong with it, but I err on the side of caution because of ethics.
