A local, easy to shop at, store for hunting supplies had SN as a curing salt for making cured meats like beef jerky. I won't say where I am or where the store is but I was able to buy it easily. I felt good purchasing it and having the clerk just ask me if I was part of their rewards program. I have it now and a gun. Just thinking about direction.

If it's curing salt it might not be pure

Usually curing salts have just 6% of SN in them and you need your SN to be at least 95% pure.

I did four rectyatalizations from hot water rapidly cooled with an ice bath filtering the crystals that fell out of solution first then repeating. The Mel temp (melting temperature) started out at 470 c as a mixture of sodium chloride, nitrate and nitrite salts. With each recrystalization the temperature fell for the Mel temp of the resulting crystals until I got down to 275 for the melt temperature. That's close to the temp for pure at 271 c. I'm confident I have pretty pure crystals. The color also changed from pinkish to an off yellow white color which matches the reports. I feel I have the pure stuff now.

The only tool I have is Mel temp at the local college lab. I could titrate potentially but I've always been very comfortable with Mel temp for purity. We made benzocaine in an undergrad organic lab and it was the only thjng we were allowed to taste that we made since the tiny dab of it caused the spot on your tongue to go numb.

Despit all the accuracy we could do with tlc plates for purity (we didn't have a nmr then) the best way was with Mel temp. Any significant deviation was impure.

Since this is a salt and I recrystalized it multiple times from the original mixture I'm confident in the results for me. Given its intended purpose there is not a concern I have about slight impurities.

Are you able to send a small sample off to be tested? or possibly find a way of testing it's purity yourself. Would be cool to know the official purity of your experiment.

I have considered going this method. SN has been hard for me to source in the US and keep coming up on dead ends. I don't have a lab to work it in so would be cooking it at home. Was thinking this method or doing a mixture of Sodium nitrate and calcium sulfite. But I think Calcium sulfite might be hard to get as well. :-/ I saw there is a test strip way of testing your purity so you might consider that.
