It was my birthday last Monday and even though most of them said happy birthday none of them actually got me anything. No one got me a single present. I spent $100 on my brothers birthday, $150 on my sisters and $50 dollars on my cousins and none of them got me a single thing. Saying happy birthdays just tells me Facebook notified you about it. I can have strangers tell me happy birthdays. Family just pretends they care, jokes on them, it just makes it easier for me to ctb.

Oof, I've been there. I personally like to splurge when it comes to getting people gifts and don't expect much back. Just a heartfelt card or anything that looked like it has some care put into it is good enough for me. When they can't even do that much it really hurts. Sounds like they didn't even do that for you and that really sucks! I hope you were able to celebrate with at least someone, because - maybe it's just me - birthdays have got to feel like one of the loneliest days. I'm interested to see what would happen if you told them about this.

I certainly do think that people only pretend to care just to make themselves feel better, most people only really care about what directly affects themselves and this is just the reality. You cannot trust and rely on people as doing such a thing will just lead to more suffering.

You're right, people only tend to care when something threatens or affects them. Otherwise they just take for granted that you are fine and don't actually care. I wouldn't take it personally, most people are NPCs and don't think anything through, including their relationships with family. But I entirely understand your pain and also have a negative relationship with my family. Hopefully you can have a better birthday next time.

If you're seriously considering it more simply because your family isn't a good support network for you or you think they don't care about your life, I don't think that's a very good reason. Almost everyone has plenty of room for independence and relationships outside of family members and you can't count on somebody like family to care about you. You don't choose them, after all. I know "make friends" isn't the best advice but I don't think such a serious thing like CTB should be considered just off the basis that your family doesn't care about you as much as you'd like them to.
My reason for ctb is mental illness, just saying this makes it easier to ctb in addition.
