Considering that nitrogen is slightly lighter than air, at a flow rate of 15l/m I would say that any O2 is pushed out of the hood/bag pretty quickly, maybe just a few seconds.... Also the hood is pre-filled with nitrogen before you pull it down to the head. Maybe do a test but this time you pre-fill the hood/bag beforehand? Sorry this is all I can help with. I hope your health sitation improves.
Hood needs to have a normal O2% (20.9%) before testing starts.
We are testing-
1- time it takes from when 25lpm is started(gas turned on) to 0% O2.
2-Then,testing how long it can hold a very low(under 5%) O2 environment AFTER gas is turned off.(I'm not too sure if many ppl do this,but I saw 1 or 2 did so I added this part of the test.).

Exit Bag and Inert Gas Basics —A very, very long post, I know, but I feel like I've fielded a lot of questions about this, so I figured I'd spell out everything I know. Others on the forum should please add to this thread whatever reliable technical information they feel is appropriate for someone attempting this method to have.

The idea behind using an exit bag with inert gas is to create an atmosphere around your head that is both free of life-sustaining O2 and can carry away the exhaled CO2 that would activate your hypercapnic alarm.

The Gas:

You will need to keep the inert gas flowing at 15 liters per minute (Lpm) for 40 minutes to be confident of ending your life —in other words, you'll need a minimum of 600 liters of inert gas. In the past this would have been helium (He), but due to the uncertain availability of genuinely pure He, the best current options are nitrogen (N2) and argon (Ar). Both are reliably available in pure form (no air contamination) from stores that supply welders. N2 is also available from some brewery supply houses, but the purity of the gas should be confirmed to your satisfaction. Both N2 and Ar should work to ctb and are similar enough in their properties to be treated identically for use with an exit bag.

Pressurized gas cylinder sizes are not standardized across the industry, nor internationally, and it can be difficult, if not impossible, to tell how much gas they contain from a photograph on a website.

In the US, a 20 cubic foot (cf) cylinder is the smallest you should use for ctb; a 40cf will allow some margin for flinching, practicing, etc. "A 20cf" and "a 40cf", or "a 20" and "a 40" is nomenclature US welding supply houses will recognize, so asking for either should get you the desired product. A 20cf cylinder is quite small for industrial use; I've had clerks tell me, "well, we have a 40, but we'll need to special order a 20." It's up to you what you do in that situation. Personally, I have a 40cf cylinder. It has allowed me to flinch and abort my attempt three times now, and I don't need to worry about refilling it. I bought my N2 at AirGas, a national company here in the US. They do not demand any sort of professional certification for purchasing inert gas, and no more than the usual forms of ID depending on payment method.

I know nothing of gas cylinders outside the US, so if you are using other than US-typical cylinders, you'll need to call and ask to make sure whatever tank you're contemplating holds 600L of compressed gas. Hopefully knowledgeable forum members will add cylinder sizing information to this knowledge base.

Cover story: N2 and Ar are both used for welding. N2 is used in beer brewing. In my day job, I use both N2 and Ar to flood partial cans of expensive paint, to displace the O2 in the cans and prevent the paint from skinning over and going bad. It's a cost saving measure. The clerks I've bought gas from have never heard of that trick, which has meant they don't know enough to interrogate me on my motives or to try and quiz me on my welding knowledge. They have merely said, "huh! That's a new one!"

The store clerk may ask how you're carrying the pressurized cylinder "back to your shop," since pressurized cylinders can be very hazardous to transport (the valve is vulnerable to damage in an accident). I haven't had any trouble when I have told the clerk, "in the back footwell of my car, and very carefully padded!" What they really want to know is that you are aware that a pressurized cylinder is a missile waiting to explode if anything damages it, and that you know enough to not let that happen.

hello, after an attempt to CTB last month my family is on high alert, meaning im not able to act atm, when i move out late next month, ill be proceeding with my plan, however ill be living in student accommodation, so i cant order N2 directly to my building as its a prohibited item, due to this, ill have to order it to a local pick up point

my problem is that the only nitrogen bottles ive seen on ebay are 2L (28 mins gas flow) or 8L (82 minutes) the 8L bottle i found comes with a regulator and tubing, but the only issue is that it weighs 15kg and is 82cm, so id have trouble transporting it, ive not got a car, so id have to get an uber from the pick up point, and carry it up some stairs to get to my room, would you recommend attempting to carry the 15kg bottle (im around 41kg) or just attempting to CTB with the 2L bottle? im not able to order gas directly from the supplier as i have no car and I doubt they would hand it over if i told them i was transporting it in an uber, also the 8L bottle is 82cm so the driver might have some questions but i could fit the 2L bottle in my bag safely

was thinking of ordering 2 bottles of the 2L nitrogen bottles and only setting off the second tank right before i put the eb over my head, but im concerned that will produce a surplus of gas and that the bag could potentially blow off my head

basically, what would you do in my situation? how risky is it to deviate from the recommended 40 mins of gas flow? saw exit say 2L of gas is suitable but after coming on here im not so sure

As Exit says 2L is suitable. 5L is the ideal, even though you do not need 5L. If the setup is properly done the brain is gone in 5-10 minutes. With a 2L cylinder you do not have room for testing, so you can buy two of them (one for testing). If you are not confident with 2L buy the 8L.

Am I able to attach tubing directly to the regulator above? Also would someone be able to help me figure out the size of the tubing required? Or if they have any other recommendations of what regulator to buy it would be greatly appreciated!

yeah thanks i am going for an eb, id go with the 8L to be safe and have some test runs, but unfortunately its going to be too heavy for me to carry, and im not sure how to get around that, any ideas?

as for test runs would you recommend buying a dummy head to practice on or should I practice on myself? ive attempted to ctb with a helium setup before but it was pretty naff and failed but i almost blacked out which gave me more confidence as i also learnt that this method is as painless as its rumoured to be

The helium tank I purchased came with this type of valve:

Can I use this to achieve loss of consciousness? That's all I need. I plan on CTB by FSH. The helium is just used to knock me unconscious so I don't feel the hanging.

Would I just turn the valve on like 1-2 rotations to release the gas into the exit bag and keep it running so I stay unconscious?

I dont have a dummy head and I have not done many tests with my setup, I am very confident I got everything right, I chose the SCBA method. But maybe you could get one and test. If you practice with yourself it's very risky because you can go unconscious in as little as three breaths, or 10-20 seconds. At that point there is no going back unless someone pulls the bag/mask off your face, so be very careful. Are you going for EEDB or Exit bag?

You are saying 2L = 2 liters right? I thought people were recommending much much higher quality than that. Something like 15 lpm so that would mean like at least 300L of helium. Is 2L going to be enough?

im using nitrogen, most feasible canister for me is 2L at 200 bar, which gives 400L, ~27 minutes of gas flow, but im just wondering how risky that is as exit says it would be enough but people here recommend having 600L which is 40 mins gas flow, the canister which exceeds that amount is far too heavy for me to carry

The best balance is a 5L cylinder at 200bar. It gives more peace of mind. Most people go with 5L or 10L. The 2L has also been widely used.

2L Cylinder
The 2-liter cylinder at 200 bar contains approximately 400 liters of nitrogen at atmospheric pressure (1 bar).
Calculation at a flow rate of 15 liters/minute:
  • Theoretical time: 400 liters Ă· 15 L/min = 26.7 minutes
More realistic data:
In practice, you will not be able to use all the gas because when the cylinder pressure drops too low (normally below 10–20 bar), the flow becomes unstable or stops.
Approximate actual time:
  • About 24 to 26 minutes safely at 15 L/min.

5L Cylinder
Time at 15 liters per minute
Theoretical time: 66.7 minutes
Approximate actual time: 60–65 minutes

Thank you so much for your help! Yes I'm currently in the process of building my exit bag. One last question, does it seem like 1/4" oxygen tubing is the right fit for the regulator above? This is my first time buying this kind of stuff and really don't want to mess it up, thanks again!

This one I got is 106 liters which is significantly larger than 5 liters you are suggesting.

And the valve that I got with the tank, do I just turn it very low? Like 1-2 rotations?

Besides that, 200 bar is high enough for making nitrogen expanding about 1.05 times worse than ideal gas, which means getting about 380 liters instead of 400 liters at the sea level, assuming that the temperature doesn't change after expansion.

I am not sure mate. You gonna have to try. I am not proficient about exit bag but it looks like other people in this forum have been using regular oxygen tubing.

Your cylinder looks tiny and the valve is nothing I have seen before. You probably better buy a pure nitrogen cylinder at a welding store and then connect a gas flow meter regulator so that you know that you are pumping 15L/m into the bag.

All of this tank stuff is confusing to me. Yeah the tank I got is pretty small but I hope it's enough to achieve loss of consciousness. That's all I am really after. Hanging is what I am really using to go. The helium is just needed to make me unconscious.

Don't confuse inert gas asphyxiation (IGA) with CO poisoning. They work through completely different mechanisms.

With IGA you are displacing O2 from your environment, thus depriving your body of necessary O2, while flushing away the CO2 that would trigger your body's hypercapnic alarm and cause involuntary self-preservation. To effectively displace the O2, you need a controlled environment from which the O2 can first be flushed and then excluded. So first you need to get rid of all the air, then you need to keep out any further air, then you need to flush away your exhaled CO2. The smaller the space, and the more readily the space is sealed, the easier this is to accomplish.

When you put an exit bag over your head, you are creating a low-O2 environment. The CO2 is flushed away by the constant flow of inert gas, preventing alarm, and you are allowing your body to use up whatever O2 it has in its bloodstream while not providing it any more.

Short version: The O2 in your body runs out and isn't replaced.

With CO poisoning, you aren't displacing air/O2 from the environment; you are introducing into the environment a molecule (CO) which binds more readily to your blood than O2 does. You're providing your haemoglobin with an easier alternative than O2; your body grabs the CO and ignores the O2. Since your blood can only carry so many gas molecules at a time, with the CO taking up all the room in your bloodstream your body is starved of O2.

When you climb into your car with a barbecue that's putting out CO, there's still plenty of O2 in the car's environment. You're not excluding the O2 as you need to do with IGA --replacing the air with a completely different gas-- you're adding to the existing air a new substance (CO) that your body prefers to O2. This preferential-molecule process makes it much simpler to manage the environment on a large scale. You don't need to get rid of the O2, you just need to provide enough CO to take up all the space for O2 in your bloodstream.

would it be unwise to combine this method with SN for maximum certainty of death? lets say i were to ingest SN right before proceeding with my EB, that way if anything goes wrong and im left brain damaged, the SN would finish the job

When I picked my n2 regulator , I made sure to pick a decent brand name one and stayed away from any big no name online ones-these are completely unreliable!.
I also decided I will test it by running it continuously for 30 minutes.
I picked a dual stage with integrated flowmeter regulator with a mid brand name.
I wanted a better brand but there weren't any in dual stage n2 with flowmeter integrated.
I did the above especially because I'm not an expert on regulators etc.
