A large new analysis of meta-studies finds that exercise is more beneficial for conditions such as anxiety and depression than standard psychotherapy or medications.
The new study found that essentially all forms of exercise produced significant mental health benefits.
Shorter, high intensity exercise programs produced the greatest effect
Exercise provided the greatest mental health benefit to people with depression, or who had been diagnosed with HIV and kidney disease, pregnant and postpartum women, and otherwise healthy adults.
Physical activity is 1.5 times more effective at reducing mild-to-moderate symptoms of depression, psychological stress, and anxiety than medication or cognitive behavior therapy, according to the study's lead author, Dr. Ben Singh.

Experimentation is a good way to discover what may be helpful. The only difficulty is that many people have difficulty summoning the internal resources to try. It would be also helpful to find a way to improve self motivation.

Any kind of therapy and physical activity can only have success when the actual source of a mental illness can be cured. And out there are so many different kinds of sources that can cause mental illness, each one is individual.

I know the source of my mental illness, that causes deep depression, no will for life any more, no motivation, no success, and serious CTB plans, although everything else would great.

It's an existencial crisis here, no success (mainly financial), no new business idea, depression, failures, more problems less motivation and less motivation -> CTB. If there was kinda "Reset Button" that leads to a free mind, I would say that probably physical activity, therapy (some kind of life coach) could make me successful again. But unless the source of all this dispair is eliminated, I don't see any recovery chances. The one thing requires the other thing.

Jesus christ, the bold font hurt my eyes. I have to disagree that fitness is some sort of a cure. I used to be a very active person in the gym, I remember training with big weights, it helped me stay stable for a while, but eventually it just crashed and crumbled away. I guess for me it's the combination of being in a sexist oppressive environment plus bipolar disorder (depression goes hard)

I'm speed walking for 30 mins a day atm. It's low impact cardio. I can only do it cos the meds I'm on atm are giving me more energy. I couldn't walk fast before these meds, the low motivation and lack of energy would prevent me. Does it help mentally? Maybe just afterwards for a little bit. It's week 1, hopefully will have strength to keep it up.

They say it helps 'mild to moderate' depression but they don't include severe. Perhaps that acknowledges the impossibility of exercise with severe depression?
