So, I'd been doing a little better up until lately. But with it being summer, and doing summer activities and things like yardwork, I've found myself drinking a lot more.
And here lately, I've noticed my depression creeping it's way back.
Wondering if any of you all fell the same?

I don't really drink (almost never), sorry I have nothing to add
Yes it's a depressant
Not the same type of depression but yes it is indeed a depressant (lowers neurotransmission— in other words, slow down the brain and nerves). Just thought to point that out

I don't drink anything except at communion because of how negatively I've seen it affect other people~ Unless you're doing it alongside other people (with a designated driver ofc), the results are usually bad, especially if you're already depressed~ Also, especially don't do so if you're borderline or prone to addiction~ >_<

It's a self-destructive habit, and self-destructive habits tend to make you depressed.

It depends though - while its a depressant a little can make you feel great. As someone with autism it's the only time I really feel at peace so i hope to buy a table for liquor and have a little supply on days I need to leave the house. Being numb is the way to go

Drinking is definitely a physical depressant. I had to quite a couple of decades ago...it was just taking me down, but it was definitely part of a massive depression I had. Yeah, not sure if this woodwork for you, but if you are feeling more depressed with drinking, it could be worth stopping and seeing what happens.

Yeah, I've been trying to cut back, but in cutting back, it seems like it's gotten worse?

Yeah, could be more than one thing causing depression? Seems good to keep the drinking cut back if you can.

Depression is a big burden, hope you can get some relief

Out of curiosity, how much do you drink? I know everyone's body can have different reactions to drinking, so I would say for myself a little bit does tend to help as I feel "lighter", but I wouldn't say I get numb. Does your body just react differently, or you drink a certain amount to get that numb reaction?

Alcohol lowers your inhibitions. It's also a physical depressant. If you're prone to hang overs you going to feel physically worse and if you were raised with some kind of distaste for alcohol you'll feel guilty. Unless you over come it. Historically people drank all the time. Clean water on demand is a relatively new concept. Making alcohol was a way to sanitize water. And have a constant drink that wouldn't kill you. Stay hydrated to stave off physical symptoms and if you can come to terms with drinking if you have psychological/emotional issues.

Someone else mentioned how it disrupts brain function. As a result of that, it increases impulsive activity and screws with hormones. For me, it messes with my hormones. I wish you the best of luck tho!!!

I have some hormonal challenges, so I'm cautious especially when it's warm out or will have a meal and water. I'd say I have one beer or one cocktail over the span of 3 hours. If I really need it, 2 cocktails in a night to just get 'tipsy' but still in control - the feeling 'lighter' just feels like the silence in my head is there rather than all the noise. I mostly drink at clubs so while I like the numb feeling I also don't trust people when I'm out. I go for a drink maybe once every 3 weeks.

As I explore if CTB is my future, I can see myself wrapping up parts of my life, having a nice bar cart, and having the ingredients for delicious cocktails, which I absolutely love... and maybe take a course. And make delicious cocktails that give me the numb feeling and protect me from people.

Quit while you still can. You dont actually want alcohol, any cold, tasty beverage will suffice. Get some non-alcoholic beers. It will feel weird at first, like something is missing, but you will feel much better in the long run.
Alcohol disrupts your brain in subtle ways even in low doses. I was sober for 8 months and after a few weeks of very little drinking there's a noticeable damper on my mood, my motivations, hell, my whole outlook on life.

My advice is this: Never drink alone. Save it for special, social occasions. Enjoy a non-alcoholic beverage and the clear head that comes with it. You got this.

Yeah definitely. For me alcohol always made me feel like shit mentally the day after, even when I didn't drink much and it couldn't be attributed to a regular hangover tbh.
Also for me alcohol seems to "turn off" my antidepressants. My friend read sth about your liver prioritising metabolising alcohol over meds, so that's why it works like this for some people, maybe? I don't know though.
Anyway as long as I'm trying to recover I've been avoiding alcohol at all costs (I haven't drank for half a year) and while it does make socializing harder, I think it was a good decision

Drinking never fixes anybody's problems. It may make them worse. It will make you forget your problems for a while, and sometimes that's worth doing, but it's easy for that to turn into a habit, and eventually into more serious alcoholism.

I'm not saying you should not drink at all. But you should have - and stick to - some system that keeps your drinking under control.

I think it depends, sometimes drinking helps me feel like a human being again, some other times I get sad while drinking but it's a pleasurable melancholy of sorts. Maybe it depends on setting too, but yeah, avoid it if it makes you feel bad, or at least avoid drinking alone and making it a habit.

I was drinking a lot for the past couple of months. Stopped a few days ago. That's about it. To be honest, I enjoyed myself. But I just can't do that. While I'm mentally in a better place, I'm physically worse. That's typically what drinking does. Harms.

Your body starts giving you liver damage, which eventually turns into liver disease and then cirrhosis. Also 100ML of rum has 230 calories. That's just crazy. Put on quite a bit of weight. Need to lose that as well.

So no, just like any drug, it will give you a high at the expense of your life and health. thing is you need to be healthy as long as you're alive. You can catch the bus anytime you want today, tomorrow, next year, but you want to be healthy till that day.

Same here, friend. Same here. Yes, the drinking is probably contributing to my crankiness, as is my unstable sleep schedule. It's the worst. Do you drink before bed? Alcohol is bad enough for emotional stability for other reasons, but it also fucks with sleep.

Drinking doesn't affect me much anymore negatively. It used to but I've got a tolerance now. I take a antidepressant that is a SNRI. I got depressed after taking a recreational dose of DXM recently. DXM is also an SNRI. I think that's what did it. I also took mushrooms, but they never make me depressed. I'M gonna lay off the DXM.
