Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

this has been on my mind lately. i don't think i have the mental energy and emotional willingness to write a note knowing it'd be found by my family, who are awful people... but if i did write a note, i was wondering if i could use it to generate discussion in my local community about certain topics. like, i was thinking of writing about the climate, or mental health, or queer rights; not to express myself, but to sort of champion a cause that i believe in and raise awareness. potentially do something positive with my death, y'know? has anyone else thought of doing something similar?

i have been tempted to wright about big issues in my areas in a note when i go, i do not plan to leave a traditional note at all, but a few private goodbyes with close friends. i would like to highlight issues with lgbtqia+ issues in my country but it would not be news worthy as suicide doesnt get shown in papers

You may be interested in this guy. Went out in a horrid, painful way and was barely in the news. His death accomplished little for a "cause".

damn, i remember that! feels like it happened longer ago. truly awful that nothing came of it, but i would ctb regardless, so trying to help a cause would be more of a bonus than the main objective. might as well try.

yeah, i get that. i also wasn't planning on a traditional note, but i have a few messages ready to go off automatically whenever i ctb, if i end up doing it. and i'm really sorry to hear that your country isn't very accepting of lgbtqia+ rights, i know what that's like. i hope things get better for you and you might not have to resort to ctb; hopefully things get better for us all as time moves on.

The press don't like to publicise anything about suicides for fear of prompting more. The last thing they're going to do is let someone's cause be publicised. Not worth it. You're better off doing it while alive. It's a lost cause putting it in a suicide note. They don't care that a person DIED so they're not gonna care about a secondary cause. It's just a total waste of time and effort. It's better to go out and demonstrate

You should watch 7 pounds on Netflix. Don't want to spoil but it's exactly what you're talking about and it's basically guaranteed to make you emotional.

There's always the possibility of writing a blog before you ctb and highlighting all your talking points there. The only thing is that it would probably make it quite difficult to actually get paid attention to if it wasn't a note directly tied to a death, although it was already pointed out that the authorities aren't going to publicize any notes.

It wasn't really the same thing as you mentioned krxbs but I remember coming across a blog that a man wrote before ctb'ing where he just talked about why he was doing it and how he felt and random stuff. Maybe you'd be interested in reading it if I can find the link and you don't already know of it. If I remember correctly, there are quite a few posts on it including comments from family and friends.

oh, i wouldn't go as far as to write a blog, but thanks for the suggestion @HarmedVessel. i haven't heard of the man you're talking about, but that sounds as interesting as it is tragic. i would love to look at his blog if it's not too much trouble for you to find it!

I mean, I suppose I've considered martyrdom when I was a Christian.

As they say, "The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church".

However, now I have no desire to die for any "God".

Perhaps being a martyr for a political philosophical cause would be tempting, though.

thank you @HarmedVessel! i'm too sleepy to properly process things at the moment but i'll take a look at it tomorrow, that blog looks really interesting. i didn't expect it to be that old, wow.
i didn't even consider martyrdom but that's wild @Sufi. isn't christianity against suicide? at least where i live, that seems to be the consensus, so i imagine it wouldn't come off the way you intended it to if you decided to ctb for the sake of martyrdom. i'm curious what your ideas about it were though.

Yes, they're against suicide but they don't consider martyrdom suicide.

They believe martyrdom is basically the highest level of sacrifice to God and a golden ticket to heaven.

But one is not supposed to want to be martyred, because then the intention sounds like suicide, obviously.

yeah the two perspectives are "i could bring something good out this" or the more pessimistic "nobody would care".

the thing which would push me away from the idea is my own ability to write something meaningful, and since there's no way to elaborate it would have to capture everything that i would possibly want/need to say. i don't know if i would be able to do that.

it's an interesting idea that i throw around a lot.
