I'm supposed to get my SN in a few days and I'm really afraid of opening the box it was shipped in and getting accidentally exposed to the SN and dying from it even though I will NOT be opening the actual bottle of SN, just the shipping box so I can put the bottle of SN into a lock box. Do I need to wear safety goggles, an N95, and gloves when I open the box? Or should I be okay without the gear since the SN is going to be in a bottle with a child safety cap on it? also, do I even need to put it in a lock box since it is going to be in a plastic bottle? i also may not be able to get a lock box before it gets here. Will it be safe to keep in the box it was shipped in and stick it in my ottoman? I'm not going to open the shipping box unless if I have a lock box, and I'm going to keep it away from heat and moisture and anything else that could cause it to catch on fire. I also have this intense fear of me or my loved ones somehow breathing it in even though it's going to be stored away in the box. i know it may be nothing to worry about, but this is just terrifying to me and I'm having anxiety about it. I also know that my boyfriend may wanna leave the air conditioner off whenever we're gone and idk how to deal with that since the SN needs to be kept in a cool environment. And can I Cancel my order before it gets here if I decide that it's too risky to have it at my place? Or does it not work that way? and can I also safely dispose of it if I decide I don't want it?

No, it's not that potent. Keep in mind it is a food additive that is eaten in beef jerky, bacon, and many other processed meats. It kills people when they take 1 1/2 tablespoons or so all at once, but whatever small quantity you could get by touching won't hurt you, plus it won't come out of the container into the box anyway.

You are catastrophizing.

And no. You won't die from unpacking the bottles. Trace amounts of SN won't kill you spontaneously.

There is no such danger with SN unless you are planning to store it by the ton in a warehouse.

Honestly. Contact your supplier and cancel the order. You are just driving yourself crazy.

If you can't cancel and get the package, you shouldn't just throw SN in the regular garbage. It's not dangerous as it is, but if it ends up on a dump and leaks in the groundwater it can kill wildlife/aquatic life.

SN should be taken to a dedicated disposal site (usually run by your city or county) to be safely disposed of.

Please talk to your doctor about your anxiety. This is not normal and they can probably help you figuring out how to address rational vs irrational fears.

Oh well it's just weird because when I read about it it says to wear protective gear and that it can catch on fire/explode if it's around combustible or incompatible materials and that breathing it in or touching it can kill you. i also don't know what to do because there is supposed a heat wave this week, and I'm worried about that too. I also am confused because there was someone on here that posted that they touched it and that their fingers turned purple and they had all of the symptoms of overdosing on it even though they just touched it, and that's why I started worrying about trace amounts of it possibly killing me. i also can't store it in a cupboard, and so I'm worried my ottoman could be dangerous to store it in but it's the only place I can hide it in. and they have given me a lot of different medications and therapies over the years but nothing has really worked so far for the anxiety.

Where did you read this? SN isn't a dangerous chemical. It is a common food preserve that is used to cure meat. Touching it will not kill you. People eat it all the time. If you have ever eaten any processed meat, it has SN in it. It is only harmful, if you eat it a large amount all at once.

It isn't harmful to touch it. Small amounts aren't absorbed through the skin. I used to work in a deli when I was still in university. We used it all the time. We touched it with our bare hands when working with it. No one's hands turned purple. No one was ever poisoned or got sick. Whoever told you this is telling you a yarn and having fun with you. Just ignore them. If it makes you feel better, buy a pair of disposable latex gloves when handling it and wash your hands afterward.

SN is safe to store at room tempature. It is fine to store it in the ottoman. It doesn't spontaneously combust at room tempature. The heat wave doesn't matter. Those conditions aren't hot enough. Just don't store it on the heater.

Thanks. It's honestly so confusing because I've read several things on Google about it, and I've read several things on here about it too and So far the answers have been mixed. I've even gotten mixed answers on here about how hot my apartment can get before it becomes dangerous. which doesn't make me feel reassured or safe because i don't wanna just Willy nilly believe something that someone says and then find out later that they were wrong and then i end up suffering the consequences because I believed someone that gave me false info. All of the things I read on Google also gives me anxiety because it makes it sound like it's some crazy dangerous chemical that can easily kill you if you don't know what your doing. It's definitely not an easy thing to cope with when you already have anxiety on the daily lol. I normally would've only ordered it when I knew I was ready to go, but since the US seems to be cracking down on SN I would hate to wait and then find out later that I can't order it anymore because people figured out that it was becoming a more popular method. it's all fucked lol.
And I can send you a screen shot of that thread I saw about that person that touched it and apparently died. maybe you can help distinguish my fears about it lol. also, a lot of the stuff I read on Google said it can be absorbed through the skin which is another reason why I got worried.

I too think about wearing full HAZMAT suit when handling salt. I could pretend I'm Walter White.

The US isn't cracking down on SN. SN isn't illegal. There are no restrictions to buying SN here. Anyone can buy it and have it delivered to their house. Nobody cares. If you have questions about properly handling and storing SN you can always contact the manufacturer and tell him your concerns about using it and storing it safely in your house. They may be able to better relieve your anxiety as they would be the best source to go to, and you can be sure that they will give you accurate information about their products and will not give you misinformation. People ask questions all the time before buying a product.

It is safe to store at room tempature. It will not spontaneously combust in your apartment. It doesn't become unstable until it reaches 986° F. Your apartment will never get that hot.

Sodium Nitrite Chemical Stability: Stable at room temperature in closed containers under normal storage and handling conditions. Unstable if heated, may explode at temperatures greater than 533°C/986°F.

It is safe to touch SN. It is widely used in the food industry. People don't die from touching it. People eat it all the time when they eat processed meats. It's possible this person had a severe allergic reaction and went into shock. You don't have to worry about that. You would already know if you were allergic to SN.

Thanks for the response. Yeah I was thinking about contacting the manufacturer to get my questions answered. I was just worried that if I said "hey I ordered this bottle of SN for the 4th of July to cure meats and I realized that there is going to be a heat wave this week and Idk where else to store it other than In my ottoman" then they may be like "okay this person doesn't seem to know much about SN, why did they buy it?" And then get suspicious about why I got it in the first place. do you think they would get suspicious?

If you contact the seller they will send you something like this.

Yes it can be absorbed through skin but not nearly enough to kill you (unless you pickle yourself in the tub).

Yes it can explode if everything around it is burning.

@Hercules has given great advice here. Contact the seller if you must but they will definitely get suspicious if you start talking about heatwaves, apartments and ottomans.

Good to know! I just realized that I've had a bag of the wrong type of SN for over a year now and since both of those types of SN are pretty similar it does make me feel a little better. Especially since I haven't had any issues with it being stored in my ottoman lol
