you can use either, its a matter of preference.
some people prefer chat, which will open up the same as the group chat just 1 -1. (however i personally find the notification system lacking and dont prefer it. but i have read others that prefer the layout)
or you can start a conversation which will open up a more forum type layout and all the notifications for it will go to that little envelope beside (or under? on mobile) your name at the top.
