There are different stages of general anesthesia. The "lightest" stage resembles deep sleep. The brain activity recorded in EEG is characterized by delta rythm, which is exactly the same EEG pattern as sleep. As anesthesia deepens, brain activity in the cerebral cortex stops completely. The EEG resembles that of a dead person. So whoever experienced general anesthesia knows how death feels like.
