I think Trump has allegedly a special relation to a bodyguard that saved him at the assassination attempt at the ralley. He was impressed how the bodyguard was ready to sacrifice his life without blinking an eyelash.
Maybe if the most important thing is your ego, wealth, power things like risking your own life can feel strange. But I think the bodyguard got promoted.
I know that people like Putin are extremely paranoid when it comes to their safety.
I think the bodyguards have to go through psychological tests, probably risk tests, loyality tests. For them everything in on line. They are extremely loyal.
But in all honesty I am really puzzled that you never hear a story where a bodyguard goes rogue. I mean there are so many dictators on the world. And so many bodyguards.
Are the bodyguards really extremely free of ambivalance when it comes to their leaders? I mean in most countries you might would be tortured to death. At least in Russia. In probably most scenarios you (and your family) will have an unpleasant death no matter whether the dictator dies or not. Maybe there are not many scenarios where such an attempt had a good impact on the life of the bodyguard. But honestly there are people who self-immolate for political reasons. The threshold for that seems higher. But maybe bodyguards have personality-traits that make their behavior (or such extreme behavior) more predictable to avoid such outcomes. And maybe they are monitored 24/7.
It reminds me of an anecdote that Douglas Rushkoff shared. A Marxist scholar that I really admire. He was invited by billioniares for for him unknown reasons. It turned out they wanted to ask him some questions. They wanted to be prepared for end-times. And one question was: What makes our bodyguards and staff loyal to us? Should we be able to give them electroshocks to control their behavior? What can we do if money loses its value to make them loyal? And his answer was something like. What do you expect me to answer? I am a Marxist scholar. My answer would be treat them good. Treat them like they were good friends and they will stay loyal. The doomsday billionaires were not all that content with this answer. Lol.
